Oh, I see now. I must've half read your original post. You tried Windows 7 and had the problem so you reverted back to XP. Anyhow, the problem could still be the same. I'd look to make sure that DMA is enabled in Windows 7. It also could be a driver issue. Make sure that all your drivers are up to date and properly installed. It would help if you listed the specs of your system. I'm using Windows 7 64bit without any problems.
On a side note... Jdobbs would x264 be able to utilize all 16 or 24 cores from the new amd server chips? I'm toying around with the idea of using the new amd server 6100 chips. I'd like to be able to get these encoding times down to 2-3 hours from my currently 10-12 hours. I always do 2 pass encodes.
