You could try to use tsMuxer to demux a small piece of the video you want to test by using the Split & Cut function, perhaps 2-3 minutes should be enough, remux to .ts or .m2ts or another program to mkv, then use Music Fan's suggestion of MKV2VOB. Should save you a lot of time, especially if no reencoding is necessary.
