It seems to me that video is following the audio route: Blowing up the bandwidth and processing complexity for little real benefit. Saturation of a mature technology?
High resolutions makes sense though in photography when one can zoom-in for details and make new pictures from image sections, for example.

Perhaps just an intermediate step towards real, goggles-free 3D viewing?
