It would be slightly futile to take a UHD disk and convert it to HD - just buy a disk mastered at HD, as I'm guessing more and more will use a 4K scan. However, the benefit of the new feature is to be able to backup UHD disks to either bd-25 or bd-50. So far if you want to keep a copy you would have to use a HDD (and then it's not easy to play unless you have a powerful pc to feed your tv), or try and use bd-xl disks, which can be problematic and are expensive to the point where you could nearly buy a second copy of the disk. If you can compress the video, or lose enough of the audio to fit a bd-50, then you have a safe copy for a reasonable price.
