Some TV stations in Europe broadcast HD as 720p50 rather than 1080i25. I remember the hot debates about what is better when HD TV was introduced.
Secondly, many home videocams have the option to select 720p50 or 1080i25 (or now even 1080p50).
Given the fact that the true resolution (details) of home videocams came hardly ever close to 1920x1080 due the real-time compression artifacts, 720p50 has been a very reasonable compromise with no visible loss in true spatial resolution. Moreover, 720p50 needs not to be deinterlaced by the player/TV, avoiding deinterlacing artifacts.
