Freeware:
.ass -> MaestroSBT-ANSI 2.6.2.1 or MaestroSBT-Unicode 2.6.2.1 -> .sst -> Muxman -> Rip into Vobsub using SubtitleEdit 3.5.16

There are .sst handedits necessary to go from SBT -> .sst -> Muxman.
If needed I can write a MaestroSBT -> Muxman How-To with preferred parameters.

Rendering a 1- to 4-line Verdana 18pt
with Antialiasing + Outline looked very good to me recently.
Played from 23.976 DVD -> Toshiba VHS/DVD/HDD -> Composite -> Sony FHD,
and from 23.976 DVD-> Oppo 205 -> HDMI -> Loewe FHD.
