On the DShow side, I continue to use COREAVC (even though LAV may be faster) because, historically it has had slightly better corruption handling (corrupted DCT coefficients instead of large black blocks, iirc). It's not so important for playback, but for encoding, the errors will be permanantly embedded in the video.
