StaxRip is such an awesome program, and I use it a great deal. Thanks so much for all the work you put into it!
I have a couple questions: 1) Using StaxRip with x264, if, instead of resizing your video, say to 720x400 for 16:9, you keep the video at 720x480 and tell the mkv to display it as 16:9, will this result in a higher quality video, though at the cost of increased bitrate? 2) Are you sure that a 55% compressibility check is optimal? In the 55% compressibility check encodes that I've done, the resulting videos come out at times showing signs of overcompression. A smoothed image where you would expect to find a sharp, detailed image, etc. My encodes thus far have been with the "speed" setting set to medium. Or maybe setting it to slow or slower would help the quality? |

dont resize unless you want to or have to as to hit a certain size or device as far compressibility checks try your next encode with the x264 Film HQ Preset instead of a Two Pass one and see if it works for you cheers

Looks good, StaxRip should run out the box on Win 7 then.

try to link up with Zathor to see if he can help you get DGIndexNV working with StaxRip cause he's done a great job integrating it with MeGUI i just tested it out and DGIndexNV is working

@MuLTiTaSK
I've not tested recent MeGUI builts but from reading the thread I noticed Zathor is doing a good job. He gave me a hint to add a delay but since it's still crashing for now best thing I can do is wait until my card arrives, it should arrive this week.

@multitask
I did two encodes to test out x264 Film HQ, one using that profile (which came out to about 760kbps), and another using a 2-pass encode which came out to 2,112 kbps. In the Film HQ one, forehead creases and walls were noticeably smoother and compressed-looking, while in the much larger version, they looked sharp and crisp. A third encode was done at 55% compressibility, which came out just a few kbps smaller than the Film HQ one, but the two looked about the same. |

At the time 50% for x264 was established a long time ago it was similar quality to 60% XviD/DivX which was the recommended value when post processing was used. I've recently changed the assistant to only complain if it's 20% from what is defined in the encoder options.

What i'd like to ask you is how I should use the "aimed quality ratio" (maybe the one you've been talking about) that is always set to 50% and that I always set to 95%. Thanks. Last edited by myksto; 11th January 2010 at 21:25. |

@myksto
Best thing you can do is encode samples and movies with different values and compare the output size and image quality. CRF 18 is 100% quality and this result in large files. I always use crf values between 20 and 24, depends on various factors but mostly on the image size, small image > 20-22, large image > 22-24.

Here is a new test built:
http://www.filedropper.com/staxrip1141 It allows to customize quality, preset and tune directly from the main dialog using a context menu and has some fixes and a couple of other small changes.
