did you try update manually? just download teh KB´s you need, enable windows update service, and install em manually...

should work if i remember right..

For windows 10 im using this here for updates:

wich works perfect for me.. theres even a setting to make Updates manually and not automaticly... so youre the Boss...

No problem mate
If you dont find updates with this: https://www.carifred.com/wau_manager/
then it could be that you are blocking the update servers of Windows.. So, it might be wise to rename the HOSTS file to hosts.test or somehting to see if youre blocking teh connection with it.. That is, if you got something in the hosts, (some lists etc).

Hope that helps..

No, for me on W10 tablet, I dont block with hosts, dont really care what it does, i only use it in the pub,
I just object to it tryin to update when I wanna use it.

EDIT: any and all of my machnes could be used at any time [24/7],
when not in use, are powered down, M$ makes some major assumptions.

Service10 will NEVER be fine because M$ does not give a s#!t about bug reports from insiders! Since launch end user is a tester.
Ha HA HA hahahah. It's so funny Chek this out

From Wikipedia "Windows 10"
Quote:
In late-July 2020, Windows Defender began to classify modifications of the hosts file to include Microsoft telemetry servers as being a severe security risk.[398]
Windows 10: HOSTS file blocking telemetry is now flagged as a risk:- https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/new...ged-as-a-risk/

I suppose that there is a genuine reason for this hosts file detection, but is maybe prompted by M$ self interest.
Can just disable Windows Defender detection of it, (if you have a deliberately modified hosts).
I guess that hosts could also be used for blocking of Win updates, if you knew address of all update servers.

Thanks gonca. [think I already have those two]
I got a W10 tower a few days back, is on W10 1551, very early W10 from 2015, Version 1511 (AKA November Update).
I've never wanted W10 on desktop, but difficult to find a W7 issue on recent machine.
Will be staying mostly offline [except for maybe Linux dual boot OS, when I get it going].
Not really sure how we got 1551, CPU and system from 2018 [2nd user, ie used machine, HP Omen 880-112na].
Dont know whether to update to 1709, or current ver$ of W10, or just leave at 1551, think I'll take my time to decide.

I'm still on 1607
Once you get the forced updates and telemetry under control it's not bad

Well, decided that 1551 is un-usable.
I kinda liked [or maybe had least dislike of] 1709, but as my Chuwi Hi10 Pro x64 tablet came with [and currently on] 1909, and my Linx 1010B x86 tablet can go to 1909, and my W10 Tower is currently stuck at 1909, decided to make my min usable base images 1909.

W10 tower seems currently stuck at 1909, says,

Feature Update to windows 10 version 2004
The windows 10 May 2020 update is on its way. Once it's ready for your device, you'll see the update on this page.
I guess that it dont like doin' lots of consecutive feature updates in short time space, so is temp blocked for now.
I've already had it installed with 20H1 (ie May 2020) direct from ISO, but wanted to keep Hewlett Packard recovery +
other stuff that came with system, so have stepwise updated from original 1551.

HP extra stuff contains a lot of crap, but not all crap.

EDIT: I may upgrade to W10 Pro [currently Home], can apparently get Pro licence for about $12.00 via some You Tube
recommended sites.

EDIT: I just tried one of the $12.00 Pro licence links, was 404, I'll post good link if I find one.
Here setup from ISO Windows 10 Setup / The Everything Guide / Step-By-Step
with non working [404, one year old link] $12.00 W10 Pro licence link.

Maybe some will like to follow this, an Ameliorated version of Windows 10.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwkiU6GG-YU

And a counter argument for that Ameliorated version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24szj1NmbVQ

YouTube list of clips matching "Ameliorated".
https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...ry=ameliorated

Probably not gonna try this myself, but others might wanna do it. [ EDIT: Or maybe just use the lite ver$ in V.M. ]

EDIT:
Quote:
ameliorate
/əˈmiːlɪəreɪt/
verb formal
past tense: ameliorated; past participle: ameliorated

make (something bad or unsatisfactory) better.
"the reform did much to ameliorate living standards"

Do these "ameliorated" versions restore the Classic skin/theme, or any non-Metro skin/theme for that matter?

Well it says that it gets rid of all metro apps, so I see no reason to think that Metro style skin/theme would still be supported.

NetSpeedMonitor mentioned elsewhere in this thread has ceased to function on my W10 home 20H1 and 20H2 x64 (x86 unknown),
it was still working on 1909 having been installed back on original 1551.
It does install, and would seem to all work except that it shows a double vertical line on taskbar but no Up/Down text metrics.
Hovering the mouse over the taskbar NetSpeedMonitor area does show bitrate/byterate on a tooltip, so it is still working internally,
think must just be some kind of problem rendering to taskbar.

I've gotta have my byterate monitor, maybe I force myself to do a bit of windows progging. (unless someone can point to equivalent prog).

EDIT: How it should look, is the 'U: D:' text.

You should probably change the title of this thread. It was originally intended for users who were forced to upgrade from XP to Win7 because some software would no longer work under XP.

But now most posts here deal about Win10 problems. This is OT for this thread, please make a new thread with a title like "Win10 Sux big time". I think everybody knows his by now...

I :agree:
Even though XP itself sucked when compared to Windows 2000 /98/ 95, of course. Remember, before XP there was no fancy desktop theme (read: Luna), no stupid Search Companion animation, and there was a useful distinction between the verbs "open" and "explore" in the default file manager

Come to Linux, Stainly, you won't regret it.
I'm personally using:

- Fedora 33 x64 for fun, casual googling, talking with friends, YouTube, itv, BBC iPlayer etc
- Windows XP x86 in a VM from Fedora for old stuff
- Windows 10 Enterprise Dual Boot from the company I work for for everything work-related

Avisynth falls in between XP and 10, with both running the very same copy and the same version of Avisynth x86 (Manolito's approach), but the latter having also Avisynth x64 with my very slow transition towards x64 of all the plugins/filters...

I agree with that, had Linux first installed 2008 or so (openSuse 11.something). Hardware driver situation was not good back then, especially for printers, scanners, some soundcards, graphics was working but slow.
And software ecosystem was not at the level where it is today. That has changed in last few years, most hardware has linux drivers, very good open source graphics drivers (Intel and AMD), Vapoursynth, NLE tools, Steam...

I ditched Suse and used Windows 7 for a few years because it was good (after some tweaking, of course). Then MS came up with these Windows 8 garbage, and then they completely lost their mind with this Win 10 .
Since 2015 I use Manjaro Linux. It is of course a lot of work to get used to the way things work in Linux, but it pays of with the freedom you get. And keeping Windows in a working condition seems also a lot of work (conclusion after reading this thread).
