It looks to have originated in SubRip.
SubRip:- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubRip

Post on D9 {pointed to by the Wikipedia page}:- https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.p...941#post470941

A little bit via Matroska Docs:- https://matroska.org/technical/subtitles.html
From VLC:- https://wiki.videolan.org/SubRip/

SubRip (.SRT) subtitles support in players:- https://ale5000.altervista.org/subtitles.htm#

EDIT: Dang, I'm using SubRip v1.50b5, apparently updated to v1.57.1 in 2018:- https://sourceforge.net/projects/sub...bRip%201.57.1/
