Working with grainy sources - can't seem to find middle ground
Hello,
Intro I've spent years lurking, reading through threads and find a lot of helpful information, so thank you! The Problem I'm generally happy with x265 encoding and find it great at compressing the vast majority of video sources, but I'm having a problem specifically with Psych, which is very, very grainy. I can produce a reasonable encode in x264 of an episode for a specified size (or by using vbv) and it looks good on my TV with my eyes. However, I can't seem to produce anything that retains a reasonable amount of grain in a 'pretty' way using x265 (for this specific source). For example, the grain retained in the images below is almost static and just looks weird. Perhaps it's just me, but x264 appears to be able to produce better quality grainy encodes at the same bitrate (and lower) than x265. Conclusion I realise the source material isn't superb, but it's the best quality Psych available to consumers. Am I missing something? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Screenshots I apologise if these are meant to be thumbs. I will add the linked thumbs at the bottom just in case and delete the larger previews, if needed. Have you tried --tune grain? It's probably overkill for this example, but if it fixes the problem, that's a good datapoint.
To improve grain encoding without a huge bitrate hit, I'd try --nr-inter 250 and --rskip 0, and perhaps --hme. |
