Question about subtitle position - may not be possible
Hi,
Background: We're re-doing our media room after it got trashed by a small cyclone. My dealer is trying to convince me to go for a 2.35:1 screen instead of my current 1.78:1 screen. Our movies are saved on our server in .mkv file format and served via a couple of plex clients. The movies are mostly backups of blu-rays. Currently I'm using the nvidia shield as the plex client, so they're pretty capable. There are a few good reasons to go the 2.35:1 route, but the one HUGE issue I can see is - forced subtitles. For those english movies with occasional spoken foreign languages I've had to save the subtitles as SRT files and make sure they're imported in the UTF-8 format - this ensures the plex clients can play them without any issue. However, almost without exception, the subtitles display in the black bar BELOW the movie image - which is fine for a 1.78:1 screen, but would make the subtitles effectively invisible on a 2.35:1 screen. There are no 'sub-title positioning' controls within plex to allow repositioning of subtitles so, as far as I can see, my only options are: 1) Go back to using a stand-alone disk player (ditching the server idea) and adjust the subtitle position to match the screen - I'm not keen on this option, 2) Find some way to 'burn in' the subtitles in the movie file at a position within the video image frame, or 3) Tell the dealer - "Sorry - a 2.35:1 screen isn't going to work for us." Has anyone on the forum had any experience with the second option? Is it even possible? If so, what tools would I need to make it work? Failing this, I'm going to throw in the towel and go with option 3, but I thought I should check here just to make sure. I'm grateful for any information provided. |

https://www.videohelp.com/software/easySUP Feed it with .srt and adjust positioning to keep inside video. I use the setting font size: 78, margin: 152. That will keep the subs just above black bottom bar on AR 21:9 videos. Of course when watching AR 16:9 movie you don't wan't the subs that high, I use margin 70-78 depending what looks the best. For some reason easySUP have issues with 24 fps source and I haven't figured out how to solve that. So I use goSUP that works just fine on 24 fps source. Regards |

Thanks heaps for that! I'll check out easySUP.
When you say easySUP has issues with a 24fps source, do you mean, or does that also include 23.976 fps? I think that's what the majority of my movies are. Does goSUP work the same way as easySUP? Thanks again for the info! |

For some reason when using easySUP for 24.000 fps source it doesn't work when muxing back into tsMuxer. It still shows as 23.976 therefore the subtitle will be out of sync. When using goSUP for 24.000 or 25.000 fps source tsMuxer works just fine. Both tools work the same way, pretty intuative GUI. The big difference is the subtitle size and marging settings. Also some minor differences with the output, easySUP looks a little better graphical than goSUP. Here are my settings I figured out by measuring (the size may vary) original subtitles on my 60 inch plasma. I do it like this: Demux subtitle from original source (if needed) Edit in Subtitle Edit and save as srt (if needed) Make sup with easySUP or goSUP Add BD-title and sup in tsMuxer Export to BD-folder Use MakeMKV Code:
For keeping the subtitles above bottom black bar (21:9) In easySUP: Format: BD SUP Resolution: 1080 Frame rate: 23,976 Size: 78 (I try to keep the size of original source) Color: here I choose mostly white 255,255,255 but sometimes other like grey 206,206,206 Style: Normal Outline: 2 Color: 0,0,0 Background: None Safe zone: 0% Margin: 152 Shadow: 1 Alignment: default Opacity: default Same setting as above will look different in goSUP: Font size: 50 Bottom offset: 100 Font color: same as easySUP Outline color: 0,0,0 Opacity: default Shadow: default Align: default Format: SUP/PGS Reasolution: 1080p Framerate: 24.000 or other fps easySUP (16:9) Same settings as in (21:9) Margin: 70-78 depending on original subtitles goSUP (16:9) Same settings as in (21:9) Bottom offset: 44-50 depending on original subtitles |
