A one-two-three for mkv cutter to make a simple edit

MKVcutter is a simple tool and one that says it can cut on an exact from (rather than keyframe.) Ok on that.

I'm able to mark start and stop in it's user interface.

What I'm getting into a loo with is how to save and save the
desired part.

Can someone give the steps to do this once the start and stop positions are named?

One thing I noticed I didn't have was a target folder. It needs a named folder to finish the edit.

I searched through Doom9 and only found references to mkvmerge. A giude if available would be ideal-- something I can print to paper and save.

Some progress on this.

I got the MKVcutter to select a start and stop more or less to test at random.

But MKVcutter appears to engage MKVmerge as a shell command or some such.
My fear is that when I woek with the desired file I will tun into the same keyframe
dilemma.

MKVcutter can cut on any frame and thus makes smart rendering (with progressive h264). It uses MKVmerge but not only ; it also uses x264 to re-encode GOPs at beginning and end of the cut parts, except if you cut on keyframes.
Its developer is Selur who also made Hybrid ;

Group of Pictures (GOP) always has confused me.

But this tool should work if as described. In using only MKVmerge, my Part One of two would not cut cleanly at a fade out. That is what I'm trying to correct-- just a second or two. When using MKVmerge for the Part Two to fade in, there was no problem since a different section of the media.

One part I was missing was making that temp folder to
complete. I'll come back and give the one two three in steps for any future readers.

As to the 1-2-3

MKVcutter has a minimal dialog with the user.

Before opening the program, create a designated temp folder
which the program will use to save your work. It can be named anything
you like.

Open program

Drag the content to the small upper box.

Mkvcutter analyses the content.

Then Your content is shown in a viewer.

Setting Start and Stop in the viewer is well laid out. Either time
or frame count can be visually inspected.

Set the first marker with Start Cut
Set the end marker with End Cut

Then

Lower right, select Add To Cut List

Then
select Commit To Cut list

A new screen opens for the final procedures.

At top right, click output file to name your job.

then Save

At Temp Folder, navigate to the folder you made described above in this excercise

I've written out the steps for myself but added it here since many
of the steps are laid out with backtracking necessary if you haven't
seen a guide for it.

Is there a way to get a log of the activity?
