Yep. That pretty much describes the benefits of "placebo".

I think it's pretty funny seeing people use 6 pass on some DVD encodes. Pretty pointless really...

ENCODE_QUALITY=4 {Ultra High Quality (Extremely Slow)} for me, is the best for convert bd50 to bd25, many people do not distinguish between the original source and the converted! (45gb to 23,2gb)
course it takes time!, but this method works done after many, is the best possible quality. Also you have to see energy consumption, with the quality? If what is, is to get the best quality, if you have a powerful computer, in 3 or 4 hours you have the job done. Just wondering as trigger mode bdrebuilder placebo, to test their results.
Thanks

I use "ENCODE_QUALITY = 4 whenever I have to encode a long movie or difficult compressibility to a DVD-5.
What I mean is that beyond the preset slower no change in image quality. I've done dozens of tests and can not and will not be able to distinguish differences between the results, unless I'm going blind.
I now only use the preset veryslow(16 ref frames) for example, if I wanted to encode at crf(no level restrictions) to save about 10% in file size while keeping the same quality. What I have not done a long time because of compatibility.

Being one of the few whom is able to discern Original Vs Rerendered (be careful between the word meanings Re-rendered, Transcoded, and Copy (1:1)) video. I realize time is constant (cannot be saved) I still wouldn't use placebo as it's only good for body and thought health. For video, good for those wanting to experience...as anything is.

@ JDobbs

Merely curious...have you looked at my "Live Free or Die Hard" post about the extras? Thanks.

Hmm. My encoding rig has started to throw up BSODs after 0.44.09 was released. Nobody else has reported such issues on this thread, so I guess the rig got a bit damaged a while back when its PSU literally exploded. It runs fine on low CPU usage but doesn't like BD-RB anymore :/

Wow! What brand was that Power supply? Totally opinion, but the power supply is arguably the most important component you DON'T wanna be cheap with I've heard some horror stories of power supplies taking literally every piece of hardware with it, when it popped. I would die if my 13+ Terabytes were suddenly gone :S Which reminds me I need more redundancies LOL!

I'm running 44.09. Last night I set an encode running and woke up to a BSOD. Happened on Pass2. I started the job up again and it completed without any fuss. It's the first BSOD in a long while, but I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it's related to BD-RB; it's been hot here, so it could be temp related.

No BSOD on 44.09 here, but temps slightly higher because of warm weather. Perhaps its time to take the dust bunnies for a walk outside.

If it completed the next day -- then the problem couldn't have been BD-RB, unless you possibly changed some settings. One thing you can count on with software -- that given the same settings, input, and output, it will act exactly the same every time it runs.

Yeah, I often monitor my temps when running jobs -- and I'm seeing them higher since spring began. I also had to go in and do some dust cleanup on my radiator not too long ago. I start to get these "crash" reports every year about this time.

Hi Jdobbs first of all many many thanks for the time invested in this software, in the last months i didn't do BD rebuilds because i don't have blank media...
sorry for the off-topic, but here is the only topic where someone can post an answer to my question, i bought on ebay a 50 pack of sony blanks BD, so here is the question? whats means this statement: "Capacity: 25GB / Speed: 1-4X Made for VIDEO and 3D works", someone already developed a software to burn BD-R 3D on 25 gb blanks? or is this related to use with standalone recorders?

Hope someone have a clue about this, again sorry for the off-topic.

@had-z

No idea. There is no physical difference between discs that hold data, video, or 3D. Sounds like marketing hype to me.

Well, my BSODs are not caused by overheating, of that I'm 100% certain by monitoring mobo and CPU temps during encoding. But I'm certainly willing to blame damaged hardware.

I had an encoding orgy last night, sparked by learning of ENCODE_QUALITY=4. (Better late than never, right?) Ran three full backups at the highest quality and was surprised to see that even the slowest setting isn't really slow: all three rigs managed 10+ fps in pass two.

One of the three encodes turned out a bit odd. Here's the log:

The odd bit is that output is way undersized. While the other two encodes came within 500MB of a full BD-R, this one came out at 16GB (17 215 345 624 bytes) only. I'm aware this might have something to do with using a custom target size and it's therefore my own fault... but all three encodes were set for the same 24450MB target, and the other two came out perfect. I just don't see the logic behind these results.

I get this error: ERROR in attempt to mux (MP4BOX). Run inspect and everything's ok. Target size was 650 MB.
I also get this message: MP4Box doesn't work anymore.

Exploded? Literally? as in parts and pieces flew everywhere? Yeah, I'd be worried about other pieces getting damaged.

What did you replace the PSU that exploded with? i.e. what brand/wattage? I'm asking because there is a possibility that the new PSU isn't as strong or efficient as the one that was replaced. Maybe the load of video encoding is stressing the new PSU too much?

I know being heat related was suggested. Here in Chester County, PA (just west of Philly), we went from highs mostly in the upper 60's to low 70's (NO AC running), to the upper 80's and 90 the past few days. So if your AC wasn't running and keeping the house down to the same temps, over heating is a possibility.

@Glarioo

Unfortunately I don't speak German (Dutch maybe?). Anyway, can you translate what the MP4BOX error message says?

That's not german it's dutch. It sais the following

MP4Box no longer working

A problem has occurred that cause MP4Box to stop functioning correctly. The program will be closed and a notification will be shown when a solution becomes available.

That's all it sais.

A huge bang, a flash of light and I discovered metallic debris inside and outside the PSU. I can still smell the nasty stench whenever I walk past the rig. So yeah, one could say it exploded It also wrecked a UPS unit and blew a fuse in the board where all the house's fuses are installed. I don't actually know what that thing is called in English..

What did you replace the PSU that exploded with?
One that is 200 watts more powerful, way more expensive and a much, much better brand.

So if your AC wasn't running and keeping the house down to the same temps, over heating is a possibility.
The rig is running 20 degrees cooler now than it did when BSODs were not a problem.
