x265 for HEIF?

Hey folks!

So I'm super interested in figuring out the ideal max quality pipeline for taking a big TIFF file that's 16 bpc RGB using the P3 color space, and producing a compressed HEVC still image that is stored in HEIF for display on new iOS devices.

Using ffmpeg to pipe into x265 works, and I can produce a 10 bit 4:2:0 image, and probably 4:4:4 as well. However, what should I be thinking about to maximize the quality of the 16 bpc RGB -> 10 bit (or maybe 12 bit?) Y Cb Cr conversion? How can I make sure I keep the images in P3 properly?
