Using Handbrake to Compress MKV - No Progress
I extracted the contents of a Blu-ray disc successfully with Make MKV.
The file is huge, so I read that Handbrake can compress it to a manageable size. So I install Handbrake and try one of their presets, but the progress indicator never moves and the frame rate reads 0.00. As far as I can tell, there's no published reason why it can't read MKV files, but maybe that doesn't mean it can. What am I doing wrong? Is Handbrake incompatible with MKV source files?

HandBrake is compatible with most MKV files (it's based on ffmpeg so it can read a lot of different formats).
How long did you wait? It can take some time for the progress indicator to start. Also try a HandBrake nightly version. If it still doesn't work I would cut a short sample from the beginning using mkvtoolnix and if that doesn't process either send it to the developers (maybe test against ffmpeg). |

The file I was testing was a short, 6 minute trailer off the BD. What happens is after pressing the start button, one of my 8 CPU cores shows considerable activity, but the GPUs both are idle, even if I use the Intel or the NVENC encoding options. The status at the bottom of the screen shows 0.00 FPS encoding speed and there is no visual indication that the program is doing any work. I waited about 15 minutes. This, on a i9-9700K, which is not the slowest CPU on the planet. I did note that after that 15 minutes, I had about a 6MB file in the output folder, so I tried to play it in VLC. It was only audio though, no video.
I can reasonably expect maybe a minute or so before visual indicators come to life, but 15 minutes of doing nothing? Seems like something went wrong.

I tried a fresh session and used one of the presets and opened my MKV file, started the encode and left the room. Came back an hour later and it had apparently finished, but the file size was only 6.4MB and in VLC has no video track, only audio.

Yes, I've tried it all different ways. But it's the same result. I think it just doesn't know what to do with the MKV container.
