Install Megui

Everybody says: installing Megui is pretty simple: download the latest build and 'install' it (I google it ). But how do you this?
First I installed AviSynth (full) and this was easy because it was with an installer-exe-file. And then I tried Megui...

The latest build of Megui is a zip-file, no installer. So I downloaded this file and un-zipped it in a map. First I tried to save it in the 'c:\Program Files'-folder but this was a disaster afterwards. I could open Megui.exe, but no close because acces to settings.xml was refused. The only solution was to kill the application with TaskManager. (My system is Vista Home Premium)

So I unzipped the file to an other map outside this folder, for which I have the full rights. Then I launched megui.exe and then there was a call for updating the several parts of Megui. All went normal. I copied the NeroAAC-encoder in the default map. Finaly I tought that all was installed and I tried to encode (x264) with this avs-file:
DirectShowSource("C:\Users\Roland\Videos\nam\clips\t76_030.avi")
TDeint() #Deinterlaces the clip
#Crop(4,0,-4,0) #Crops video to get rid of black bars
Spline36Resize(640,360) #Resize the clip
ConvertToYV12()

I tried to load this script but I got the warning: "AviSynth script error: Script error: there is no function named "TDeint" ...". That's funny because in the map "megui\tools\avisynth_plugin" I saw this file; is it because this was missing in the "AviSynth 2.5\plugins"-map? Then I copied all filters from the Megui-avisynth_plugin-map to the AviSynth-plugin-map. Then I loaded again the avs-file without problem and I can make the encode as wished.

Now twice the same Avisynth-filters, in the MeGui-map AND in the AviSynth-map. I think that Megui is also looking for updates of the filters, like 'Tdeint'; and if there is a newer version, Megui will copie it to my system into the Megui-folder and not into AviSynth-map. At the end I can have different versions of filters.

My question is now: which version of filter will be taken by Megui. And why do we need 2 sets of filters?

Any help or answer is much appreciated.

if script does not have loadplugin() then avisynth plugin folder will be used.

MeGUI checks at startup if the MeGUI folder is writeable. If not it will ask for permission to do so (UAC prompt). Did this appear for you? Did you tried to run it as admin?
But nevertheless I do not recommend running it in the program files directory. MeGUI itself does not need admin permissions or will write any data outside the MeGUI folder (expect of course the jobs depending on your settings), but because of the included updater it will write data in the MeGUI folder.

Interestingly a few hours before your posting I commited a few changes which are making the first steps in MeGUI (the "installation") easier.

If you create a AVS script on your own you have to make sure that all required plugins are loaded before you use the functions. MeGUI will not copy anything in the AVS folder as this may cause problems. If you use the built-in tools all required plugins will be loaded before they are used.

Zathor + Snajpera: thank you very much for the explanation.

Perhaps my confusion comes from the fact that MeGui is not anymore a real avs-editor. I use only 1 filter (plugin): Tdeint; I have copied this filter into the Avisynth-plugin-map; that's easier than insert in all my avs-files the loadplugin() rule.
Because I should not forget (perhaps after 2 or more years...) this, I had made a personnel 'install'-procedure.

i do not mean to hijack the thread but if i read correctly above my sort of issue is along the same lines.

I have been using MeGUI for a few years now in an XP machine with no issues.

However, recently i have bought an SSD and i have done a clean installation of win 7 64bit.

When i downloaded the latest megui 2050 i have realised that there is not installer as such any more, but just a folder with the "stand alone" application.

Is that correct or am i doing something wrong? Should it be an installation process, with shortcuts, start menu etc?

thanks

That is correct. There is no (troublesome) installer anymore.

No and Yes. I recommend to extract it to a directory outside of the program files and windows directory as on Windows Vista/7 these directories are protected and therefore you will need to run MeGUI as administrator.
