madVR gets decoded video from LAV Video, it does not care what container the video is in.

Alternatively you can export the registry key for MadVR from Computer A and import it over to Computer B. |

Also no.. It's not sharper unless you can prove otherwise. Last edited by ryrynz; 18th June 2018 at 03:53. |

And, yes, professional reviewers shouldn't report the bit depth. They will get it wrong more than they get it right.

Is there actually content out there now? HDR10+ is being superseded by displays that can do dynamic tone mapping with HDR10 content. madshi has already said this is possible in madVR. I wonder if it will ever become relevant if displays and Blu-ray players are already using similar technology with HDR10.

Got my new LG OLED C8 tv but cannot set RGB to 10/12bit. RGB allows only 8bit with 4K resolution . Only YCbCr 4:2:2, 4:2:0 allow 8bit + , where YCbCr 4:2:2 allows 10bit (should be native) and 4:2:0 allows only 8 or 12bit (and YCbCr 4:4:4 allows only 8bit) . Which one should I use ?

RGB 8 bit, for sure. Also, my C7 does better with 8 bit input compared to 10 bit, less banding with 8 bit (as counterintuitive as that is), but even without the limitations of my display 8 bit RGB is much better than 10/12 bit with 4:2:2 or 4:2:0.
Edit: This is assuming you are using a "PC" mode on your display. If you use any other mode your TV will process in 4:2:2 so you might as well send it 10 bit 4:2:2. Much better to use a PC mode with 8 bit RGB input but if you like any of the features that are disabled while in PC mode maybe another mode is worth it to you. madVR becomes less important when using subsampled chroma, still better than alternatives but you lose much of the quality difference, RGB FTW.

the problem with using PC mode is that is disables TRUMOTION on LG OLEDs, this I find essential as with no motion blur between frames due to super fast response time compared to LED you can get jagged edges on bright areas in pan shots. A good example of this is at the beginning of elysium when the earth pans away form the space station, with TRUMOTION on with a low setting of 3, with my EF9500 I get a smooth sharp picture with no wobbly edges, option 3 isnt enough to give the nasty soap opera effect for me but this is subjective.
difference is night and day for me, I could not live without this. I'm currently using 4:4:4 full RGB and letting my players and madvr do all the switching duties. Last edited by mclingo; 19th June 2018 at 23:19. |

Latest AMD drives including 18.5.3 and 18.6.1 disables auto HDR switching in MADVR for me, guessing its something to be with being optiimised for windows 10 1803, i've had to go all the way back to 18.2.2 to find a stable fully working driver.
Anyone else on win 10 1709 using latest AMD driver 18.6.1 can HDR autoswitch on their TV? Anyone else with win 10 1803 using latest AMD driver 18.6.1 can HDR autoswitch on their TV? Last edited by mclingo; 19th June 2018 at 23:23. |

thanks for that, this isnt good, add this to the long list of other problems with 1803
Good to know its not just me though, i'll look at logging this with AMD, dont know is MADSHI needs to investigate as well though? |

I've logged this with AMD but also popped a bug on MADVR just in case MADSHI wants to have a look, there might be a workaround as HDR can still be toggled in windows itself using the HDR on / off toggle in display settings.

in my opinion are the amd drivers the problem, this hdr auto switch missing is started happening some months ago upgrating drivers > 18.2.1. It stopped working also with winvideo player not just in madvr with recent drivers

I have a perplexity, I'm using madvr recently, today I tested with mpc-be + madvr, vlc and kodi17.6 with a 1080p file of the tv series "the walking dead", I chose this tv series because it presents in the video a lot noise, a kind of small dots that swarm, here with mpc + madvr the image was not better than vlc or kodi, indeed it had more noise, video noise, this is the dithering? but madvr did not have to improve the general picture of the image?
am I wrong in my settings? -artifact removal- reduce banding active arrtifact, all the other off. -image enhancements in default, off! -scaling algorithms, --chroma upscaling-super-xbr -sharpness 100, activate anti ringing filter ACTIVE. -image upscaling -JINC -anti-ringing filter ACTIVE. -upscaling refinement, default, all off. --dithering- error diffusion-option 1 !!! --trade quality for perfomance-all disabled Thanks and bye |
