DVD Subtitle color limits

Using DVDSubEdit you can replace colors in the CLUT.

The most common color scheme is with the letters in white, the border in black and antialiasing in grey.

My question is this: while DVDSubEdit lets you select any RGB color, are there other limitations?

Do DVD subtitles have the same limits of black as 16 and white as 235? Is there something in DSE that performs a conversion to safe levels and colors?

Just curious since I've never noticed a problem, but that doesn't mean it isn't there.

There are no issues with that. Each color can be a 24-bit RGB value. The transparency, though, only has 16 levels.

Is that by DVD spec that subs can be any value or is it DVDSubEdit that remaps when it saves the new CLUT?

In the former then it would mean they can be brighter or darker than the movie it self.

As I said, the colors in the bitmap are 24-bit RGB. Each color is indexed into a 4-bit table.
