Which codec and container for encoding for Apple and Windows?

I need to re-encode a video under Windows (with e.g. Avidemux).

The created video should be playable under Windows AND Apple!

Which codec and which container are recommended?

AVC /H.264 with container AVI does NOT play on Apple.

So what else shoould I use?

The MP4-container works great on both of those OS:s.
And the H.264 codec should work in both of those platforms too, but you should try H.265 video-codec instead.

You should always use MP4 with H.264 for maximum compatibility.

H.265 would be a bad choice unless they are only targeting the very latest in Macs, iOS devices and AppleTV. H.264 is far better supported.
