Try to convert a HD-DVD into a m2ts-file (tsmuxer canīt recognize VC1 stream)

Hi,
iīm trying to convert my original Herbert Grönemeyer HD-DVD (live concert) to a format which will be accepted by my PS3.

I demuxed the .evo files with eac3to and with EVOdemux and both times the tsMuxeR (1.8.4 or 1.8.8) wont recognize the VC1 stream.

The VC1 stream is in real 1080i60 interlaced and iīve no idea what to do next?

So maybe you can help me with some hints?

best regards,
Oliver

Even if you successfully get tsMuxer to recognise the vc1 stream, your not going to have much joy, i've yet to be able to get my PS3 to playback a HD DVD VC1 Stream....

I convert the VC1 stream to h264 then mux to a M2TS container, the PS3 plays them perfectly.... as long as they have AC3/MP3 audio.

Hm...
how do you convert the VC1 stream into a h.264 one?
I guess that this kind of conversion is not lossless?
What are the steps you are doing?

The concert (the .evoīs) contains three audio-tracks:
- 2 channel PCM
- 5.1 channel DTS 96kHz (1.5 MBit/s)
- 7.1 channel DTS-HD (aprox. 2.5 MBit/s)

I would prefer to keep one of the DTS tracks.
Best regards,
Oliver

Another short reply...

I just created a MKV (with eac3to) and tsMuxeR wont accept this MKV either.

So i think iīve to cobvert or transcode the VC1 to "something"...

Or should i try to use the MKV and convert this one into a format the PS3 will accept?

PS3 won't play MKV, yoru choice for HD containers are MP4 or M2TS.... MP4 is picky as hell...... M2TS is easy to make work.

DTS is also a no go when streaming/playing from a container... it will need to be AC3 or MP3, convert the 5.1 DTS track to 640kbps AC3 using eac3to

I use mencoder to convert VC1 to h264, it's very reliable and i always end up with a PS3 compatible stream with teh command line i use.

Sounds like RipBot264 is exactly what you need.

Hi,

i just tried the RipBot264 yesterday evening (installed all the neccessary filters, programs etc.) and at one point the software tried to open "getinfo.avs" and i get the following error message:
DirectShowSource: Timeout waiting for graph to start
(c:\temp\RipBot264temp\job1\getinfo.avs, line 2)

The corresponding avs file looks like this:

DirectShowSource("C:\HD_Tools\eac3to\groeni.mkv",audio=false).ConvertToYV12()
WriteFile("C:\temp\RipBot264temp\job1\info.txt","Framecount")
WriteFile("C:\temp\RipBot264temp\job1\info.txt","Framerate")
WriteFile("C:\temp\RipBot264temp\job1\info.txt","AudioRate")
WriteFile("C:\temp\RipBot264temp\job1\info.txt","AudioChannels")
WriteFile("C:\temp\RipBot264temp\job1\info.txt","AudioLength")
WriteFile("C:\temp\RipBot264temp\job1\info.txt","Width")
WriteFile("C:\temp\RipBot264temp\job1\info.txt","Height ")
Trim(0,-1)
So what did i wrong or whatīs the problem?

Best regards,
Oliver

Is EVODemux still used? Probably a rediculous question...

EVODemux is old and hasn't been updatedfor a long time, demux the disc with eac3to, and don't demux files you have already dumped to you hard drive, let eac3to dump straight off the disc.

Hi,

i (just before i read your reply) converted the .evo (video only) in a MKV (with eac3to) and tried to feed RipBot264 with it.
After 30s the media player starts with "DirectShowSource: Timeout waiting for graph" (again).

And eac3to worked with the original HD-DVD (AnyDVD HD enabled).

Also tsMuxeR just said: Unsupported format...

So my last try is to demux all tracks with eac3to again (directly from the disc)...

I donīt know if RipBot264 problably will work but iīm just unable to build up the correct graph for VC-1?
Best regards,
Oliver

Not sure, i don't use ripbot, i use mencoder, it does not need avs scripts or graph's to work.

Hi,
i think i should just give up trying to convert the HD DVD concert to a blu-ray format... :-(

I used your guide step for step some two days ago and it didnīt work either...

Demux with eac3to directly from the drive: works
Muxing the sound into the MKX: works
Encode using Mencoder: fails
...okay, fails isnīt correct.
Mencoder tryīs his best but...
- every 1,5s a frame is skipped
- speed is about 2fps/s on a Athlon64X2 4850e
- Mencoder states that the framerate is 23,997fps - but it is original 60Hz interlaced (TV)
- tsMuxeR canīt recognize the video-stream. The audio-stream is no problem but not the video-stream.

Mplayer isnīt able to playback the demuxed MKV (without audio).

So - iīve no clue what to do next.
Only two things come to my mind which may be the problem:
- there are two video-streams in the EVO (Picture-in-picture)
- the framrate is (because it is a broadcast conzert) real 1080i60.
Itīs interessting that eac3to recognizes this framerate (and names the filenname of the video 'xxx1080i' but all other tools recognizes the video as 23,997fps.

This conversion should be a little christmas present to my wife which is one of the biggest Grönemeyer fans and we have a HD-DVD player in my home-cinema but only a Blu-Ray player (PS3) in our living-room. So i tried to convert to concert and store it on the Harddisk of the ps3...

Best regards,
Oliver

Here is the batch file i use to transcode my VC1/h264 to h264 for use on the PS3

Code:
mencoder.exe %1 -vf harddup-ovc x264 -x264encopts crf=18:frameref=3:bframes=3:b_pyramid:direct_pred=auto:weight_b:partitions=all:8x8dct:me=umh:mixed_refs:brdo:bime:trellis=1:nopsnr:nossim:subq=6:level_idc=41:threads=auto -oac copy -of lavf -o "%~dpn1.crf.mkv"
Save that command to a file called ps3.bat or something similar... then drag the mkv that eac3to created onto that batch file....

Sit back and relax, after 6-8 hours you should have a mkv file that can be remuxed to a m2ts (mencoder cannot yet create m2ts containers)

And welcome to the world of HD Video encoding I have a 2.83ghz Quad Core Intel Q9550 that is baught to its knees with HD content... it stuggles to stay at 10fps.... 12 if easy content, and some content will drag it down to 6-8

When the performance difference between the Q9x50's and the i7's is resonable i'll be down to the PC shop to get one!
