What is the best way to extract episodes from a DVD?

I've searched and can't find anybody asking this question in the last few years, so I guess I'll ask it.

I've just discovered the technique I was using ( makemkv) was giving me bad results, so I'm wondering, what do you guys use to rip DVDs? And especially to get seperate tv episodes from them?

I see there's a sticky about blu-rays, but nothing on DVD.

I tried sticking a VOB into DGIndexNV, and selecting Save Project and de-Mux, but it doesn't output seperate titles.

Thanks!

You can use DVDfab (similar to makemkv) or just good old rippers like smartripper or dvddecrypter. Export whole vob files and split them by settings chapters from/to. This worked always for me.

I rip via RipIt4Me (uses DVD-Decrypter, and DVD-Shrink),
Rip the whole DVD to a folder (not ISO), then via DVD Shrink, select Re-Author,

Select your episode (they usually have the entire lot as a single entry and episodes as individual options),
Click compression Settings, select No Compression, select your optional subs and audio streams.
Select BackUp, to file/folder (not ISO), and OK (will create a separate DVD folder with VOBS).
Repeat for each episode.

Above from memory, not got an ISO handy right now. (should not be too difficult, just follow your nose).

Thanks guys!

It turned out in the end it really was the .VOB at fault. However, I really do like Ripit4Me, and I got it to output .VOBs for each episode. If MakeMKV fails, I'll have something to fall back on now.

The information about episodes does not reside in VOBs.
I thought that everyone should have known this by now, it's 20 years now, almost a generation.

In most cases, with simpler authored DVDs, many rippers can separate the episodes.
But the things get complicated when only the episode itself differs whereas the leaders and credits are common, and one wants these as well (attached to the episode). Some manual work is badly needed.
