UHD HDR -> HD SDR : how?

I think it's safe to say that an UHD picture, when downscaled to HD, is usually better than native HD source.

So, let's say I would like to use some shots from an UHD source, and edit them together with HD. Now, as I'm a complete UHD noob, which is the best way to load UHD HEVC source into Avisynth 2.6? Downscale to HD? Convert from HDR to SDR, so the result is as much similar as original HD source, color wise?

Thanks in advance for the help, and, an happy new year to anyone!
