6ch-WMA to AC3/DTS

Hi,

I've been searching for some time and only found solutions to transcode from WMA to 2ch-something. Is there a way to transcode a 6ch WMA file to something like AC3 or DTS?

Can this be done? What is necessary for it? Thank you very much!

You can use MeGUI to convert 5.1 WMA to 5.1 AC3 by using the aften profile and keeping original channels; the audio portion of MeGUI is based on behappy.

(Or if you want you can downsample to 2-ch)

Sweet, I expected it to be difficult but MeGUI has developed into something quiet powerful.

How good is aften as an AC3 Encoder? When you're not so much concerned with size and considering this this the second encoding with a lossy format, would it be better to encode with something up to 640Kbps or stick with 384Kbps?

IMO Aften is does a good job

Regarding bitrate, can't say definitively because too many factors including the original source quality, setup you have for listening etc..

You can test it out yourself on a small sample and use whatever settings fit your tastes/goals

I use Steinberg Nuendo to decode WMA to (mono)wave. And then the Steinberg Nuendo Ac3 Encoder

Also you can use behappy and avisyth. Create a avs with your wma as directshowsource (decoder should be WMAudioDecoderDMO)
Then load your avs into Behappy and reencode it to ac3 via aften

Try my dshow2wav here http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=141441
This is the easiest way.

Use the following command line:
dshow2wav xxx.wma | aften ...(other options) -readtoeof 1 - xxx.ac3

Yep, is old. The ac3enc is deprecated and now Aften is the free ac3 encoder to use (also with BeSweet-BeLight).

But the decoder method, Foobar2000, can be used and we can send the output, without intermediate big wav files, directly to Aften encoder to output the ac3.

If you want use any AviSynth method (MeGUI, BeHappy, Bepipe, Wavi, SoundOut) I recommend BassAudioSource(), instead DirectShowSource(), like decoder. The free encoder must be always Aften.

TMPGenc Express 4 converts WMAPro 5.1 to multi-channel WAV. The WAV can be converted to DTS or AC3 with eac3to (SurCode needed for DTS).

Solved with last version dshow_x264_20081105.
Nice tool, also work directly with WMV container:

dshow2wav "Amazing_Caves_1080.wmv" | aften -b 448 -pad 0 -readtoeof 1 - zz.ac3
