Problems with Aegisub on new PC
Hello,
a friend of mine and me work still with Aegisub to translate subtitles. This is our tool of choice because in my opinion it's better than Subtitle Edit. I like it for translating. But now my friend got a new PC and the video-window (player) stays grey. It doesn't matter which video-format it is - the windows stays grey. The video is opened the resolution of the window-size is changed and we hear audio but the window stays grey. Aegisub offers to open a dummy-video -> window stays grey. We tried all Aegisub versions. (64 bit/32bit and portable) - no change. We tried in the options FFmpegsource and avisynth -> grey window. His PC is an AMD with Win 64bit Home and Nvidea grafic. As far as I know Aegisub doesn't need any codecs. In our testingtime I tried Aegisub in many fresh reinstalled PCs with different Windows versions -> I had never problems. Just his PC is so silly. What can we try else? Last edited by Matt Kirby; 29th June 2019 at 11:03. |

You should not reset preferred decoders. You should install LAV filters and set all preferred filters to LAV. It are the standard Microsoft ones that give you the grey window.

Hi Matt !
The newer Aegisubs calling newer Avisynths did not work here, I got crashes too (Win7U64 SP1). For that reason you mentioned I am using old Aegisub 2.1.8 (32bit, portable). I have set Aegisub 2.1.8 to use ffmpegsource. Usually it is DVD work I am doing with Aegisub, so I load .d2v and .ac3 This runs safely and quick as the wind. I guess for certain sources like .d2v Aegisub has to fall back on Avisynth anyway, because I had to choose Aviynth 2.60 MT 32bit to make it work. (I suggest using Groucho's AviSynth Repo with 9 switchable Avisynth versions, so that you can get back to your preferred Avisynth version easily).

Then I'm at a loss. Can you open it with Avisynth - DirectShowSource? You can also try GraphStudioNext to troubleshoot video playback on this PC.
