How to tell if DVDShrink was used on a copied DVD?
I have a couple old independent movies on burnt DVDs that I'm converting. I'm pretty sure I copied them myself from the originals years ago.
The source footage has some blocky artifacts and now I'm suspecting I may have used DVDShrink to reduce the films from dual-layer to single layer. Although the original film source is really grainy anyway, so it may just be a result of that. Is there any way to tell? If the original was dual layer, I might have to try and find it for sale again to get a better archive version. The DVD cover images don't indicate 'dual-layer' either. The films are only about 1h15min each so it does seem unlikely. Thanks |

Not sure if you can tell, myself I set options to 9.whatever (dual layer disk output), so is never compressed (only ever do folder image).
If you buy a naff 2-in-one, (two titles on single DVD) then its gonna be naff(on occasion not naff, eg dual side - then obviously not DVD-Shrink, dual side, not a burned disk). The only real way to tell is if you can do a MediaInfo pass on it, and if it says summick like "created by DVD-Shrink", BUT, I would be guessin' it aint gonna do that. EDIT: I dont think you can tell, could be wrong of course. [try it yourself, anything in MediaInfo ?] EDIT: You could also try doing DVD-shrink disk, & in MediaInfo, see if compressor stuff differs from original. [do multiple extracts, & MediaInfo of same, and look for DIFFERENCES, and make what you will of those]. Patience and common sense your only hope, methinks.

I remember to have read about DVDShrink shortening DCT coefficients,
so one may do a test run of DVD Shrink and compare the DCT tables / quantizer matrices that DVD Shrink typically leaves vs the original. Jongovs MPEG Tools -> MPEG Video ES Utils
