Matroska cropping question

I know it's possible to set crop parameters for a video track in the container, but would it be possible to toggle the cropping on or off during playback or somehow else have a cropped and an uncropped version without having to double the filesize or to remux the file prior to playback?

In mkvmerge it's: --cropping <TID:left,top,right,bottom>

EDIT: it seems the cropping values are written into the file, but with various splitters and decoders the video doesn't get cropped at all
