This is nothing but exactly copied last HDDVD specification. It seems that DVD is not supported since maxrate is ~28mbps. Blu-Ray just added 3D to specification, but nothing change in 2D, and they added chinese standards to specs like DRA audio, which is de facto same thing as DD+ or DTS High resolution, is not lossless.

What implications does this have for players and hardware ? will there be new chipsets that can play 1080p60 ?

There are consumer camcorders for 2 years that have 1080p60. Even some handheld cameras have 1080p60 now (e.g. sony cybershot hx100v, hx9v)

IMO it doesn't make sense that "AVCHD 2.0" will now support 1080p60, but blu-ray doesn't ??? I always thought of AVCHD as a smaller subset of blu-ray (at least by bitrates)

well 1080p60 and 1080p50 require level 4.2 for AVC, i don't know current chipsets are capable to decode this.

That's why I'm asking YOU, shon3i, because you are "in the know"

What do your industry contacts say about upcoming players/chipsets ?

I strongly doubt that BluRay will be revised to include 1080p50/60 support. I see much more of a market for this in the AVCHD world (consumer generated content).

That doesn't mean that BluRay players won't be revised to support this new AVCHD 2.0 standard...

That would be my guess anyway

I assume you don't know the name of these chipsets, since they exist for some time now, mostly in camcorders.

I'm not sure they really support it, they might happen to play the files but often media players are downgrading the output, or only supporting lower bit-rates and having problems with high peaks.

They support it more by accident than by design and so are fairly fussy with bit-rates.

Obviously proprietary camcorder chips support level 4.2 for playback, but these aren't the same chips used for Blu-ray or media players.

I think the only chip I've found officially supporting level 4.2 for media/Blu-ray players is the Sigma SMP8910, but it hasn't appeared in any products yet to my knowledge.

Now we have a specification and trademark that manufacturers will want to sport on their products, perhaps we will get more official support.

Regards

Phil

I can confirm that the Realtek RT1283xx chip-set inside all my Xtreamer players is able to play 1920x1080p50 AVC sources. But stutters when trying to play 1920x1080p60 AVC sources...

Playstation 3 can playback 1080p60 AVC 4.2, but it requires using slices and keeping the bitrate below 20mbps. I verified with 1080p60 output on the PS3, it works great and looks fantastic.

Playstation 3 can playback 1080p60 AVC 4.2 with much higher bitrate (tested 1080p50 with > 60 MBit/s), but only from Harddrive/Flashdrive or from Data-Discs (Br or DVD), for playback of 1080p60 / 1080p50 in an AVCHD or BDMV structure (I mean: authored) the ps3 switches to interlaced modus ... regardless of the bitrate ...

The OMAP4460 claims to be able to play 1080/60p as well.

Hey people .... you remember the topic title? It´s about AVCHD Spec Version 2.0 ... I mean, we do not talk about the ability of some peaces of hardware playing the files per se, the most newer SAP should have enough power to performe > 30 MBit/s of progressive fullHD footage. We talk about AVCHD structures, wanne say: 1080p50 or 1080p60 footage within authored discs or flash media. It just needs updates of those firmwares, to bring this players into the new frame of specification.
