Handbrake (h264) runs out of memory!

Hey peoples!

I'm trying to re-encode a video to make it smaller. The problem is that handbrake starts encoding but after a while, it runs out of memory. When i run process manager alongside of it, i see the memory graph just rising and rising and handbrake uses up 2GB of RAM! (I have 4GB and an E8400)

Are are some details

Original vid:
2.5 hours
1080p
mkv
High @ L4.1
CABAC / 3 Reference Frames

I'm trying to convert that into a 720p video.

Any ideas what i can do? In handbrake i'm encoding with the normal preset and CRF 20

Also, if anyone knows any tricks on how to use CUDA cores for this encoding job... I've got a school laptop with a Quadro card and CUDA cores
