madVR settings and users preferences free discussion

After some time using madVR and reading the madVR main thread i saw different people with very different tastes... with many options the possibilitys are near infinity. Theres no correct way to use madVR, the render can improve the quality of any source but can be potentialy destructive too...
So i started this thread to free discuss about the many possibilitys and to people who want to share yours preferences...
I d like to know the users opinions based on content type (real life, cartoons, etc...) system and screen type, perfomance and tastes

So to begin i want to talk about downscale and anti-bloating filter...
I m constantly watching 1080p sources (mostly filmed content, but sometimes old disney cartoons and some pixar animations with my son)
My tv is an hdtv 1366x768 so thw content is downscaled...
My config is
Bt 709 3dlut
Deband: low/medium
Image enhancements: sharpen edges: 1.8 anti ringing: on, anti-bloating: 50 (its a small screen so i to fell the sharpening effect i need bigger strength)
Enhances details: 1.0

Chroma: reconstruction soft
Downscale: ssim 1d 100% ll
LL AR: relaxed
Doubling: sxbr ab:25
Upscaling: jinc ar
Upscaling refinements: shapen edges 1.8 AR AB:50
Enhance detail: 1.0
Super resolution: 2
Dithering: ed 1 colored: off change: off
Trade quality: don t use linear light for dithering, dont analyse gradient angles.. don t render frames when... and scale chroma separately...

So about AB in yours opinions, is redundant to use the filter more than one time in the chain.... like two times one on sharpening and one on ssim... or three times for sxbr, sharpening and ssim? What your preferences...

I have other topics a like to debate but have to work now latter i write more

I suppose I'm not going to get much love for this, but after getting tired of "tweaking" madVR for better image quality, I just switched to bilinear scaling, since I hate ringing and artifacts way more than little aliasing. Also the performance skyrocketed by that, so able to keep my GPU on idle on main PC and even my old HTPC laptop keeps quiet most of the time.

Banding: med/high
Reduce ringing and halos
Bilinear for all scaling
Main PC: Windowed overlay (using an .icc on monitor)
HTPC: Exclusive mode, disable desktop composition (windows 7)
Ordered dithering
Main PC: all trade quality settings off except subtitles
HTPC: default trade quality settings

I do like to tweak and play around from time to time, but my go to default settings for my trusty warhorse AMD HD7850 are:

- Both artifact removals on, debanding settings both low. My old Samsung can do 4:4:4 and I'm guessing it has a lot to do why I very rarely notice any banding. I could probably live without debanding altogether.
- No image enhancements
- Chroma and luma both lanczos 4 with anti ringing on. I sometimes use jinc with animated content, but honestly I have hard time seeing the difference with moving live-action.
- Image doubling and quadrupling sxbr with anti-bloating 50. I ended up using this when watching animated stuff and trying to get as close to NNEDI3 64.
- No upscaling refinement. Lanczos 4 is already quite sharp, so I rarely need the picture be even sharper. I'd most likely use SuperRes@2 for almost all content to be honest, but the fan on my GPU is noisy so I leave it off by default. Mostly on when watching with friends or during other not-so - quiet situations.
- Ordered dithering with colored noise on. Madshi did a fantastic job with ED's, but since OD is veeeery close in quality, I just choose the road of less noise.

Now, the card could be pushed way higher and if I didn't care about the fan the main things I'd change are SR on and lancoz -> jinc. NNEDI seems to be the best for animated content, but to be honest sxbr+SR is as good as NNEDI.

This all coming from a guy whose 40" TV is about 3m away and uses 3DLut. At this distance sharpening has the greatest visible effect on most cases. Or perhaps debanding, if your TV doesn't do 4:4:4.

Remember, finding the best settings for your particular situation shouldn't be a frustrating ordeal, but a fun and a constructive nerd moment. I learned a shit ton of stuff while googling things like chroma subsampling. It boggles the mind how many users basically think it's a video game and maxing everything = best without giving it a second thought.

Dear Friends

I would like to ask you, what are the optimal configuration of madVR for my system below? How would you config madVR in my situation? I would like to have optimal settings using my system. I am not familiar with madVR, so I would be glad for sharing your experience.

I own CPU i5-4690K, GPU GTX 1070, RAM 16GB and I watch only BD or BD3D via my PC with MPC-HC + madVR + LAV Filters connected via HDMI to my Onkyo TX-NR525 and Samsung UE40H6400 (1080p).

I watch my 40" TV from c.a. 2.5-3.0m. What configuration do you prefer for such system, which I described? Should I change some default madVR settings for Blu-Ray movies as source or leave it as it is?

I would be glad for any help and your opinion.

Thank you very much in advanced.

Sincerely

I think a lot of users don't know where the quality tipping point is. I would say Jinc with SuperRes 3 gets you 95% of the way.

If upscaling SD to 1080:

xbr 100 doubling
xbr 100 chroma, anti-ringing filter
deinterlacing is forced film mode

If upscaling 720 to 1080:

jinc upscaling, anti-ringing filter
xbr 100 chroma, anti-ringing filter
SuperRes 2-3 (the image really 'pops' for me with a value of 3)

If the source is 1080:

xbr 100 chroma, anti-ringing filter
leave untouched otherwise

Ordered dithering with coloured noise and change dither for every frame unticked.

Smooth motion in all cases.

Debanding low/medium in all cases (higher than low is detrimental to detail). I recommend setting up a key to toggle debanding on/off.

Zoom control: disable scaling if image size changes by only "10 lines or less" (helpful if your movie is not quite 1920x1080).

I'm playing all real life films (no anime), and I also use a 3D LUT on a matte IPS.

Core 2 Duo on a 550 Ti so surely a low-end system

Where is that setting? I don't see anything like that in "Image Upscaling".

I m using 1366x768 tv, that implies aways upscale or downscale the movies, so in your opinions and tastes
What should be best quality upscaling a 720 source a little with jinc 1280x720 to 1366x768 or downscaling more with ssim 1920x1080 to 1366x768?
