from memory the weighted option resulted in a lot smaller file size but I've been without a PC for a month so I've forgotten what I was testing.
Don't forget to enable adaptive quantization and lookahead too.

Another thing about NVENC Weight.P..........if you turn it on for H264 encoding, B-Frame will be disabled. Not a good idea.

Only enable W.P. for HEVC encoding because NVENC doesn't support B-Frame for HEVC.

The official website of StaxRip is on GitHub: https://github.com/stax76/staxrip
Are there any merge code for stax? Merge files option doesn't work for me.

yeah I'm encoding with HEVC - I did some testing and with AQ enabled the file size was between 5-10% larger than AQ disabled.

WP is enabled and my command line is like this:

--cqp 18:20:22 --codec h265 --preset quality --output-depth 10 --weightp --lookahead 16 --transfer auto

That doesn't really tell you much. File size might can be 5%-10% bigger but quality may be 10%-15% better (or not). You need to compare same file size with your eyes.

Just enable AQ, the quality improvement and extra file size is worth it.

I noticed you use CQP mode, why not pseudo CRF mode? (It is VBR-Target Quality mode, but I have difficulty in explaining it)

Take a look on the setting here
https://i.imgur.com/k9Shlwr.png

You will notice there is less "banding" or blockiness on scene with dark background compared to CQP mode.
Trust me on this. or.....test it yourself.

Edit: Because many people complained about weight-p being broken with latest nvidia driver........rigaya@nvencc developer decided to disable weightp option temporary. https://github.com/rigaya/NVEnc/releases/tag/3.25 Thus...stick with version 3.24........

will give your suggested settings a try, I use the staxrip compare function - save a few frames from the same timeframe in source and output file, then do a direct pixel comparison between the two to see how much noise / error / garbage is in the output file.

I'm re-encoding my NAS x264 collection anyways, purpose was to maintain similar 720p quality for much smaller file size.

yes, I know. I am the devil.

EDIT: cannot try your settings as I get an error when processing:

NVEncC64.exe --vbr 24329 --codec h265 --preset quality --level 4.1 --output-depth 10 --weightp --lookahead 32 --max-bitrate 24329 --vbr-quality 27 --aq --sar 255:191 --transfer auto -i "Block.mkv" -o "Block_out.h265"

Failed to Initialize the encoder
.: 8 (NVENC indicates that one or more of the parameter passed to the API call is invalid.)

Hmm? You didn't follow the settings exactly.
-.- Where is Initial QP = 1 ? (This one is mandatory as we don't dont want set min QP contraint at default 20)
Nvencc max bitrate for L4.1 is 17500kbps.
For L5.1, max bitrate is 38400kbps

EDIT: You should get something like below. Let us modify it a bit to L5.1 as per BD-ROM-AV-WhitePaper_HEVC.
NVEncC64.exe --vbr 38400 --codec h265 --preset quality --level 5.1 --output-depth 10 --weightp --ref 5 --lookahead 32 --qp-init 1 --max-bitrate 38400 --vbr-quality 27 --aq --sar 12:11 -i -o %source_dir%%source_name%_temp\_out.h265

Many thanks JohnLai!! I haven't had time to conduct in-depth tests as yet but your settings result in about another 10% file size saving over my settings.

Both your and my settings however result in a slight loss of red, particularly noticeable in skin tones WITH static images side by side for comparison. I doubt very much it'd be noticed on a tv watching the show.. at worst the video may look a little ''cool''.

I'm hoping to have time this weekend to do some frame by frame comparisons (staxrip video comparison tool is awesome!) and report back.

Chroma subsampling issue ~.~
Generation loss = can't do much about this.

EDIT: Consider using "--profile main444" to minimize chroma subsampling generation loss. But your output file size gonna...be a trouble....~.~
EDIT2: You can read more about it at https://cloudinary.com/blog/why_jpeg..._a_photocopier

Normally I see it like this http://prntscr.com/hgypb8

But I wanted more like this
Example

TrueHD 5.1 [Language]
DTS-HD MA 6.1 [Language]
DTS 5.1 [Language]
AC3 2.0 [Language]
and so on

I want to hear if this possible to do it automatically instead of typing it manually
if it is possible how do I do it.

Any help is appreciated

DGDecNV hardware cropping problem

By setting DGSourceNV as Source and hardware cropping filter staxrip's auto crop borders feature uses the wrong values when source is codes in 1088p but displayed in 1080p. This also deactivates the forcing output mod 4 rule for DGDecNV.

How can I fix this?

Those options do not convert HDR to SDR. They only tell x264 what flags to set in the bitstream (players read the flags in order to know how to interpret/display the content). The HDR->SDR conversion has to be done in VapourSynth/AviSynth.

How does it work with VapourSynth/AviSynth?

Hey guys. What settings would you recommend using for nvenc hevc for max quality? There are so many and when I try to experiment (like enabling deband, for instance) I usually get errors

So I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to post them .

I've got gtx 1060.

Thanx in advance

PS Should I use these?

https://imgur.com/k9Shlwr

Should I select VBR HQ instead of VBR? What about cabac?

PPS It seems --weightp is still broken in the latest nvidia drivers ;( It makes my encoding process stop at random %

I'm using JohnLai's settings and I needed to downgrade my nvidia drivers to version 385.69 for -weightp option to work. I also have a GTX 1060 6GB GPU (intel I5-2500K CPU).

Dont select VBR HQ with the CQ mode setting, otherwise, you will get full 17500kbps or 38400kbps all the way and ended up with huge file size.

CQ mode only work with standard VBR.

edit: CABAC is the only entropy encoder method that is allowed in HEVC per standard. What with the question? For H264 encoding, nvenc will use CABAC as default
