Mpeg or avi and licensing

I need an expert opinion on licensed technology.

Some time ago my company imported MP4 players from China. This required a Sisvel license to pay for the Mpeg technology. Now I need to import digital cameras (DVR). They make photos and video with audio. The only codec they use is AVI.

As far as I understand avi does not make use of mpeg technology. Am I right? Second if I am right does anybody know if AVI is licensed technology and who is the licensholder/keeper?

Any information is welcome!

Then you need a lawyer.

AVI isn't a codec.

AVI is a container that can hold MPEG streams (and many others as well). So you'd better find out exactly what stream formats are being used.

Sisvel is a patent troll, not an authorized licensor. MPEG-LA manages MPEG licensing. If you actually paid them with the intent of getting an MPEG license, you got taken for a ride.
