Irregular scrolling in IVTC'ed video (anime)

Hi. I'm trying to rip an anime movie from a PAL DVD. As expected, the source video runs at 25 fps and is interlaced. I have used this script to return the footage to 23.976 fps and deinterlace:

mpeg2source("VTS_04_1.d2v")
AnimeIVTC(mode=2, bbob=4, edimode="EEDI3", normconv=true)

(QTGMC is very slow, so I just use it for encoding. For previewing, i use AnimeIVTC(mode=2, normconv=true).)

The result looks pretty well, except for two things:

* Very little ghosting, usually in the first frame after a scene change.

* Irregular motion in scrolling scenes:





This second problem is what bothers me the most, but I don't know how to fix it, because I'm still new to inverse telecining.

For what I have seen, the cause of this could be the source. Motion in those scenes doesn't look irregular, but it can be observed that frames get blurry intermittently (in the original VOB files).

I will repeat to you the first encoding advice I ever got, when I asked a very similar question over a decade ago. The words are burned into my memory even today:

1. Locate trashcan
2. Place DVD in trashcan
3. Order NTSC equivalent

It was good advice then, and it is good advice now (except these days there's usually a bluray you can get instead). There is really no reason spending inordinate amounts of work on trying to improve hopelessly ruined sources when there are better alternatives easily available on the market.

Also, the style of advice so influenced me that I'm still trying to live up to the spirit of it even today.

Thanks TheFluff for your advise. However, if I intend to make a new rip of this movie, I have no other choice than using this PAL source as of now: I can't find an uploaded ISO of the NTSC release (which means I am not going to pay for more material).

There are some other rips avaiable, but as I have stated in my first post, I still have little knowledge about inverse telecining, and therefore this project is useful to me because I can learn from it. I have two options:

* Keep believing that inverse telecine can be performed just by tweaking Anime_IVTC parameters, and in case it doesn't work, blame the source.

* Ask the doom9 guys and see what they come up with. Then, understand why their methods are effective against the problem and get an idea of how the whole thing works. Later, I will be able to solve similar problems on my own and tell others how it's done.

Still, I can understand that in this case the most reasonable solution would be getting an NTSC source. In fact, I already have another rip that will probably look better. But my main purpose is to learn, because I believe in Avisynth potential, and I want to know how far I can go with it.

EDIT: Where do I get sanimebob() from? I am already using the version of Anime_IVTC linked in your signature, I think.

Oh, you're right! It is fixed now! Then, I guess the problem is that my source comes from a NTSC version and not from the original master. That's why it's a bad source.

By the way, let me ask something not related to IVTC: is there any Avisynth filter that causes this effect?:
