VLC doesn't have hardware decoding for 10-bit HEVC (H.265) videos

On Linux, if you need hardware decoding for this format, MPV is the only option.

I find the whole situation strange because the decoding is done by FFmpeg.

VLC said that it will be present in version 4.

Why not just stuff in an updated version into the version 3 flatpak?
