Good that you mentioned BBC.
BBC used a different approach. The digital frame sizes are 788 and 1050 respectively (PAR=1), for they include also what BBC calls blanking. The extra pixels are usually painted black. Resize then to 788/1050 then cut the black borders and you'll end with some strange number of pixels but quadratic.
