Although here I see a guy claiming success with a RTX 2070.

65" C7 here. I usually upgrade my TV every two years, so 2019 would be it, but I'm not sure if it's worth it yet. The C7 has been mostly fantastic. I'd be interested in a new model that could do 4:4:4 across all frame rates, and without disabling Real Cinema/TruMotion, but that is unlikely to happen with LG. 24fps motion on OLED is unbearable without those, at least for me.

What about the B8? (It has a different processor, and I saw that you have C8.)

huhn meantioned ABL in an another thread, so I went through this ASBL thread and I was shocked by it and ABL.
Do you know how it works on B8?

Thanks!

The B8 of course has the same processor as the 7 series, but unfortunately does suffer the same issues as the C8 etc. The C8s have had their update to 'fix' the overshoot issue. The B8 hasn't yet received any update to fix that issue.

The ABL and ASBL work exactly the same across the 8 series and also the 7 series. ABL is rarely seen. For SDR, if APL is less than 150 nits, ABL doesn't activate. For HDR, well its there I guess but honestly i never see it. ASBL is more of a nuisance in my opinion, but fortunately this takes seconds to disable through the service menu.

What are people's strategy for dealing with double tone mapping? I stick to the older drivers that have correct HDR metadata passthrough and assume MadVR tells the TV the content is a max of 650 nits so the TV doesn't bother to tone map. Has anyone got a way to test this?

My June 2007 "720p" (rectangular pixel) Plasma just died today (sounds like a power supply problem, keeps clicking like it's being unplugged over and over)... Will be getting an LG OLED on Wednesday. I can grab a B7 "display model" for $1500 CDN. Do you guys think the $500-800 in savings vs a B8 or better is too much of a risk for a TV that has been in use on the show-room? Money is tight, but I can afford 55" B's and maybe even C's... Don't really have Sony money though

I would be worried about a display model OLED.

What is the size for this price?
The prices are going down at the moment before the new 9 series hit the market this month. You can get a new 55B7 for 950 pounds in the UK online.
Only go for it if you can go to the shop and try out the display by yourself (taking a laptop with you).

You're right. I was offered an ex display model 55B7 for 550 pounds that had logo burn in, so I skipped it.

Yeah that's my thoughts too... I'm thinking I should just find the cheapest C8 and roll with that. Now, C8 vs B8... I was reading this thread and others for months, but have not really seen a consensus regarding the two. So let me ask a simple question, Is the a9 processor in the C8 worth the extra money since the B8 has the old a7 processor.

Is there any settings that need to be disabled (apart from the obvious ones) either in service menu or in normal menu? I plan to disable ASBL in in-start service menu, what about e.g. "pixel shift"?

I don't really know, but not for me. The idea is using madvr that we have to disable almost every image processing of the TV, so I don't really see the point of having the a9. Not to mention that the new hdmi 2.1 in the new versions will render our TVs basically worthless
So my thinking was: pay the minimum and we can upgrade later if it's absolutely needed.

hdmi 2.1 is not making a TV worthless it simply doesn't add anything to it yet.

The promise of HDMI 2.1 is very real but it requires either having everything in the chain be HDMI 2.1 compliant or splitting things like video and audio in order to make use of those features. You'll get the full range of 4K 60 with 4:4:4 and 12 bit, plus 120 support. That's all well and good. There aren't many 4k 60 movies out there as of yet, and nothing does 4k 120 that I'm aware of (didn't say it didn't exist, just that I'm not aware of any sources for it). So that's all well and good and definitely forward thinking. If you plan on upgrading everything in the near term to HDMI 2.1 compliant equipment, waiting to get a proper HDMI 2.1 TV does make sense. Especially if you don't upgrade for a long time between TV's. That being said, the existence of HDMI 2.1 does NOT make our HDMI 2.0 TV's completely obsolete by any means.

As for a display model OLED, you couldn't pay me to take one. LOL Having come off a plasma screen, I was already careful anyway when I got my C8 but I treat it more delicately than I do the plasma. I think the fears of burn in are somewhat overblown, but, for a TV being used as a display model, I'd say that puts the risk of burn in near 99.99999999%. LOL

I've said this before, but for me its just simple logic: Its 2019, the first 2019 TVs already ship with HDMI 2.1, so by 2020 its going to be almost all of them. I can wait another year, and every year that I delay an upgrade also increases my theoretical budget. Some people certainly upgrade TVs a lot more often then me though, and thats fine.
And even if I don't buy a HDMI 2.1 AVR immediately, I certainly will within the next couple years. That said, I'll likely do it immediately, since my old one is pre-Atmos/DTS:X. But good AVRs cost more then TVs, its ridicoulous, if you add decent speakers to that (good, but not outrageous), you can almost buy 2 TVs. Luckily good speakers last you a lifetime. Just need to get the Atmos Height-Speaker extension.

Thinking about it, it somehow seems silly to try to aim for the best TV possible and even wait years and years to get one, considering its in reality not *that* expensive if you compare it to other things. High-end phones cost as much as a good 55" TV. My PC setup probably costs as much as a few of those.
My main concern is where I would put all the old ones..

EXACTLY the mentality I go in with. I spent 3 grand on my Panny Plasma 5 years ago. I relegated that to my bedroom (ok, 65" Plasma MIGHT be a bit overkill for a room the size of my bedroom, but, whatever LOL). I have my old Sony 50" sitting in the garage waiting to figure out if someone wants it or not one of these days. I'll take the "what to do with the old one" problem. I mean, people spend 800 bucks on a freaking video card that will be "obsolete" in 3-4 years. A TV for 2 grand every 5 years isn't outrageous. And it'll take that long, IMO, before the realization of HDMI 2.1 comes to pass. I do agree with you on receivers, though. That one is a hard pill to swallow. I've upgraded mine 3 times in the last 5 years and am not keen to do it again. I also need to add the ATMOS height speakers when I get a job to finish out that installation. I'm not in the "wait til everything's perfect" mindset. It's constantly changing no matter when we buy. To me, waiting for everything to be just right means you'll be waiting forever. I get it, setting a goal on what you want is fine. But at some point you just break down and go for it.

My main concern is that the drawbacks of current-gen OLEDs frighten me a bit. My room is never pitch-black during daytime (not even close), and I feel like the black level of my Sony is "just fine", so I've been debating myself on the drawbacks of OLED, vs. the drawbacks of Quantum-Dot Full-Grid LCDs, etc.

Burn-in, ABL trouble, motion stutter, LG OLEDs have all these firmware issues, Sony OLEDs are super expensive, etc. If I had a house with a dedicated video room and full black out, I might think differently (or go projector).
I could get a QLED-type TV a size class bigger then an OLED for the same price. So...

How do the sony Oleds perform in pc mode? any downsides there?

I want an oled with a 4:4:4 mode that can display 24hz with no banding and where it is possible to activate BFI or Truemotion...

You are absolutely correct about the drawbacks of current LG OLED tech. I suspect we'll find out not much has improved in a lot of those areas for the C9. I never even looked at Sony due to the price. I typically wait til night to watch UHD movies on my C8 because of the brightness issues. Watching tv is fine but a good HDR movie requires "proper" ambient lighting. Personally I can live with (most of) the drawbacks on my C8 at least until a new tech comes to rival and/or surpass it.

Speaking of firmware, though, I really have to wonder what the hell LG was thinking with their latest. I'm less than amused.

if they work like all over not low end sony TVs you get 4:4:4 with everything from BFI to motion interpolation. you usually just need the picture mode "graphic".

be aware that it is limited to 48 hz BFI that'S to panel limitations for 24p which is quite low. i personally couldn't deal with that.

it's supposed to be notable better in term of banding but a perfect screen is not there 8 bit madVR should be save.
