Does this happen mainly for grainy/noisy sources? There have been lot of discussions about grain retention with x265.

No. I ran encodes on over 300 different movies doing a 1% sample (SelectRangeEvery(4800,48)). They ranged in size from 720x480 to 1920x1080. It seems to be consistent across all of them.

I may have spoken too soon. Rather than just looking at the numbers randomly, I decided to write a program that scans through them and does calculations on the results. It's not as bad as I thought -- but a lot less impressive than I would have expected -- and nowhere near halving the output size. I'm running it again, but instead of doing the first 300 files in the database -- I'm having it randomly select the files to encode.

And then the big question
Is the size reduction worth the extra computing power and time to compress and then view?

With what I know at this point, no. I think the price of disc space is shrinking faster than any savings you'd get over time. If I were a company like Netflix that had to pay for transmission bandwidth it might be different.

We'll see what I get in this second round. It'll take most of the day to run.

I would say that for the same quality results you might be looking at 3x encode time to come down to 75% size
Plus the softening/blurring effect of x265
This is at 1080p though
At 4k it might be different

Quick Menu question
This is the first time I've tried this, so still learning
I have imported 17 episodes (The Prisoner) into BDRB.
The Menu it creates lists episode 1-16 in a column then episode 17 on it's own in a second column. This looks rather silly.
How can I tell BDRB to even things up a bit
eg 1-9, then 10-17
or 1-6, 7-12, 13-17

TIA Wally

Right now the row count is fixed. I'll probably change that at some point. But you could add MENU_MAXITEMS=9, and it would create two pages with 9 items on the first and 8 on the second.

1. Please post the contents of your ALTERNATE.TXT file so I can see if it's entered correctly.
2. Are any other encodes working?
3. As gonca suggested, please post INSPECT results.

Looks like PS4 won't play "inmux 3D" as 3D. Anybody else tested on PS4? Just wondering if it's only on my PS4 set-up for some reason.

If it doesn't -- it is in violation of the standard. But I have my doubts that is the issue.

I guess it's more fun to post a report than to post information that might be required to fix it?

Subtitle not in sync for multi-file source

Hi, I am observing issues with subtitle when i try to back up my multi file BD movies. These are standard movie discs purchased from store. The video and audio has no problem. But subtitle goes out of sync after first file. I see the text for second file getting displayed for some other file after merger. This issue doesn't happen for all split file movies. But only for some of them. I am not able to differentiate between the two types of split file movies, one which works and another which wouldn't. My setting are listed below. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Let me know if any more details are needed. Thanks.
