FLAC 1.0 to ac3 640/256/128?

Hi,

I've got a couple of encoded movies where the audio has been encoded with flac. Whilst flac is great I'm having problem with it playing through my television. Therefore I'm encoding the audio via eac3to to ac3, only question is what kbps do I encode to? Any help would be appreciated.

Use 640 kbps (for 6 channels), which is the max for AC3 and will be compatible with virtually anything

I'll definitely be using 640kbps for 6 channel 5.1 audio. Would it just be the case of using 96kbps for just the 1 channel?

use 106 kbps... 640 / 6 = 106.666 kbps... per channel

With a modern TV the format recommended for mono/stereo audio is AAC.

If you use eac3to recode the flac to .m4a, the default quality (VBR) of 0.5 is more than enough, don't worry about bitrate.

Depends on the playback device, but yeah AAC should work well everywhere.

AC3 might be a tad bit safer if you use an AVR for audio.

What the devil

106.666 kbps is not a valid bitrate for AC3 audio.

It is valid for EAC3 though.

Because the bitrate required by the LFE channel is very-low,

640 kbps / 5 = 128 kbps per channel.
