What is the option "edition" on mkv containers?

I was watching a video the other day and noticed this:

What is that "Edition 1" and "Edition 2"? What kind of feature is that? I didn't see any differences beetween them, although I guess that's the encoder business...

What media player are you using?

It appears player specific...

No matter what player I use, or even on different computers... that capture is a right-click of the mastroska icon on the taskbar which appears when playing a video...

Editions are part of the Matroska specification as far as I can see. An edition contains chapters, thus in other words it could be called a "chapter set" or "timeline".

For example:
Code:
- Chapters
  - Edition (plays the parts of the film that were in the theatrical release)
    - Actual chapter data...
  - Edition (plays the full "director's cut")
    - Actual chapter data...

Editons means like "versions" like Director's Cut or theatrical edition.

You have the option to store both version in the same file. Haali Splitter and AV Splitter are able to detect this feature of mkv.
But Haali Splitter has an issue with HD audio. Only AV Splitter works correct with mkv-ordered-chapter-files(Editions)

with Xin1Generator you can extract a chapter.xml and a tag.xml of a Multiediton-Bluray.
this files and the other sources of the bluray can be muxed by mkvmerge.

Aren't you the one who made this matroska file?

A friend did, and he doesn't know, because actually looking at the chapters there's nothing different between the versions. We're trying to find out.

He might have just created a file with multiple editions containing the same chapters.

'mkvinfo -v -r mkvdump.txt welp.mkv'

Look for 'EditionEntry' in that text file, after each EditionEntry, you will get a list of chapters in that edition, and what information they contain

So let me see if I understand. The edition feature only affects the chapters, like if you want to skip some scenes in one edition, and this mkv for some reason has two editions but they are the same, right?

The last chapter Preview is different in the two editions. The first edition plays 18 seconds at the end of the same file while the second plays 30s on a different one, which might mean that the series has two possible watching orders. Your friend must be really forgetful to not be able to remember this.

He must be. So, forgetting about the video, I want to ask, this kind of feature affects only the chapters, like for example what I said before, to skip some parts, right? How could I create two editions with mkvtoolnix?

Thanks.

Yes, as I have already noted, editions contain chapters, and thus create timelines which are to be displayed/played. Not only can you play any point of time of a single file (and not necessarily in any order), but you can also use less specified features to link parts of other files by their segment UIDs and thus have even more "fun" with Matroska.

You can create a set of chapters with the mkvmerge GUI's chapter editor, save them as xml, create another set of them, save them as well, and then merge the editions from both into a single xml file You can then just load that xml up in the chapters area of the Global tab to mux it into a file.
