Continued from prior post...
I revisited my re-authoring of "The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)" last night as I didn't care for how the original disc handled both versions of the film. With the original disc the menus catered strictly to the "Director's Cut" of the film. The "Theatrical Cut" was included as a "Bonus Feature" only, the "PLAY", "SCENES", "AUDIO" and "SUBTITLES" options applying to the "Director's Cut" only. To add insult to injury, the POPUP MENU for the "Director's Cut" was used for the "Theatrical Cut". So when watching the "Theatrical Cut" the "AUDIO" and "SUBTITLES" selections don't apply as the "Theatrical Cut" only includes a single audio track and has no subtitles. The "SCENES" selections don't apply either. Well, they do, but not for the "Theatrical Version" of the film. When making your selection the given chapter from the "Director's Cut" is played instead. Not exactly the best implementation to say the least.
When re-authoring the original disc I also included the "Theatrical Cut" as a "Bonus Feature", but with one big difference. When playing the "Theatrical Cut" I didn't use the POPUP MENU for the "Director's Cut". I used my secondary POPUP MENU instead which provides for returning to the TOP MENU only. That being said, I took the opportunity here to add yet another feature to my "Universal Blu-ray Authoring Template", menu support for multiple versions of a film. The default menus in this case are for the "Director's Cut", the menu background video calling this out now, the "Theatrical Cut" listed as a "Bonus Feature". When selecting "Theatrical Cut" the original disc would immediately start playback of the film. With my version of the disc you're taken to the "Theatrical Cut" version of the menus instead, the menu background video calling this out, the "Director's Cut" then listed as a "Bonus Feature", the "SCENES", "AUDIO" and "SUBTITLES" options also being specific to the selected version. From the POPUP MENU playback of the particular version starts immediately when making your selection, the POPUP MENU when enabled then reflecting that version of the film. __________________________________ And here's some eye candy showing both versions of the TOP MENU. Gotta love it when a plan comes together! TOP MENU (Director's Cut) ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) __________________________________ TOP MENU (Theatrical Cut) ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) __________________________________ But wait, there's more! I also included the below dedicated Playlist for selecting which version you'd like to watch. The Playlist is displayed the moment you start playback of the disc (if the option is enabled), the included "Always-On" menu providing for selecting which version of the film you plan to watch initially. Once making a selection the playlist for the FBI Warning, Commentary Disclaimer, Shout Studios and Scream Factory video plays after which you’re taken to the TOP MENU. When reaching the TOP MENU, the appropriate menus are used based on the version of the film selected. ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) The above feature can also be used for "Double Feature" discs. When initially adding the feature there were some limitations in this regard. I've since gone back and rebuilt the feature from scratch. Some structural changes to the template were required. It was time well spent however as the feature now fully supports a given disc including 2 movies with completely different menus. Are we having fun yet! __________________________________ But wait, there's even more! I needed to make sure the above also worked in combination with my "alternate" Playlist feature where one can navigate "DOWN" from "PLAY" on Page 1 and press "OK" accessing an alternate Playlist for the current movie or version of the film selected, the TOP MENU in this case being visually confined to the same aspect ratio as the Feature Presentation. It took a while to determine the path of least resistance, but I eventually got both features working together beautifully. Both versions of the film now offer a TOP MENU in 1.78:1 and 2.39:1, the aspect ratio being maintained when selecting a different version of the film from the "Bonus" page. Pics of the 2.39:1 version of the menus shown below. Gotta love it when a plan comes together! ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) Bringing Out the Dead (1999)
I authored another Blu-ray yesterday during the process of testing my "Universal Blu-ray Authoring Template". Along the way I added a new feature to the template, the ability to jump directly to a given set of chapters from any of the "SCENES" pages. The implementation is a bit convoluted at present, but works. Next week I'll be rebuilding the feature as I've since come up with a better way to go about things. In any event, pics of my latest Blu-ray adventure shown below, the menu graphics mirroring the original version of the disc, a number of liberties taken along the way.
![]() TOP MENU: ![]() (Navigating "LEFT/RIGHT" wraps around at either end. Navigating "UP" performs the same action as pressing "OK". Well, only in cases where pressing "OK" would take you up a level within the menu. Navigating "DOWN" is used to return to the previous level of the menu. If a given set of menu items are arranged vertical navigating "UP" from the top-most item wraps around to the bottom-most item, navigating "DOWN" from the bottom-most item returns to the previous level of the menu.) PLAY: ![]() (When selecting "PLAY" and pressing "OK" the above "Resume" prompt is given which includes the "Overview" section from the back of the retail cover art. The "Resume where you left off" option in this case is greyed out as playback can't be resumed.) SUBTITLES: ![]() (When going to the "SUBTITLES" page the filled circle to the left of the menu items calls out the current subtitle stream for the Feature Presentation. Selecting the current stream will automatically take you back a level to the "PLAY" button. Navigating "RIGHT" at any time moves your selection to the current stream.) SCENES: ![]() (When activating the "SCENES" option the last chapter played is selected by default. If no chapter had been played yet the first chapter is selected by default. Navigating "LEFT/RIGHT" wraps around at either end. Navigating "UP", then "LEFT/RIGHT" and pressing "OK" provides for jumping directly to a given set of chapters. Navigating "UP" from there takes you back a level, the current chapter being selected rather than the chapter selected at the time prior to navigating “UP”. Additional pics: Chapters 6-10, Chapters 11-15, Chapters 16-20, Chapters 21-25, Chapters 26-30.) EXTRAS: ![]() (When going to the "EXTRAS" page the last menu item played is selected by default. The last menu item played can be accessed at any time by navigating "RIGHT".) EXTRAS (Resume): ![]() (The above "Resume" prompt is always given if playback of the selected "Bonus Feature" can be resumed, otherwise playback starts from the beginning, no prompt given.) __________________________________ POPUP MENU: ![]() (Navigating "LEFT/RIGHT" wraps around at either end. Navigating "UP" performs the same action as pressing "OK". Well, only in cases where pressing "OK" would take you up a level within the menu. Navigating "DOWN" is used to return to the previous level of the menu. Navigating "DOWN" from the first level of the menu turns the POPUP MENU off. When turning the POPUP MENU off, then back on again the prior state of the POPUP MENU is restored.) It's also worthy of note that retail Blu-ray's POPUP MENU mirrors the positioning used for the TOP MENU. As a result, the main level of the POPUP MENU is positioned outside the 2.39:1 screen area of the Feature Presentation. This doesn't present an issue if I were to watch the Blu-ray from my plasma display. It would present an issue from my home theater however, as I physically mask my 1.78:1 projector screen down to the aspect ratio of the Feature Presentation. The main level of the POPUP MENU in this case would be projected on my black velvet masking. Well, that's not an issue now as my version of the Blu-ray positions the main level of the POPUP MENU within the 2.39:1 screen area of the Feature Presentation. If you want something done right, do it yourself evidently. SUBTITLES: ![]() (When going to the "SUBTITLES" page the filled circle to the left of the menu items calls out the current subtitle stream for the Feature Presentation. Selecting the current stream will automatically take you back a level to the "PLAY" button. Navigating "RIGHT" at any time moves your selection to the current stream.) Navigating "UP", then "LEFT/RIGHT" and pressing "OK" provides for jumping directly to a given set of chapters. Navigating "UP" from there takes you back a level, the current chapter being selected rather than the chapter selected at the time prior to navigating “UP”. ) EXTRAS: ![]() (When going to the "EXTRAS" page the last menu item played is selected by default. The last menu item played can be accessed at any time by navigating "RIGHT". Playback of the Feature Presentation always resumes after the selected "Bonus Feature" finishes playing. This includes when leaving the "Bonus Feature" early by way of the secondary POPUP MENU.) __________________________________ Details acquired from original disc prior to plugging values into my template... Continued from prior post...
And here are pics of the secondary POPUP MENU accessible during "First Playback", before and after the "Feature Presentation" is played and while playing a given "Bonus Feature". (See my prior post for pics of the TOP MENU.) Two different versions of the secondary POPUP MENU are available, the "Move GPR2030, x" command executed from MovieObject 1 on First playback determining which version is used. The "Move GPR2030, 0" command provides for setting the position of the prompt per scenario. "Move GPR2030, 1" centers the prompt on-screen against a full screen backdrop.
FIRST PLAYBACK (Proceed to Main Menu): Secondary POPUP MENU when accessed during First Playback prior to reaching TOP MENU for first time. Pressing "OK" skips directly to TOP MENU. Navigating "DOWN" turns POPUP MENU off. Version used when value of "0" moved to GPR2030 on First Playback: ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) After posting this I thought of a new feature to add to my secondary POPUP MENU. Several of the “Bonus Features” in this case include a subtitle track. Going to update the POPUP MENU so that it looks to see if a subtitle track is available for the current Playlist. If so, the POPUP MENU will include a button that provides to toggling subtitles “On” and “Off”. Last edited by Lowpro; 18th November 2024 at 01:23. |

Death Wish (1974)
Another day, another Blu-ray authored while developing my "Universal Blu-ray Authoring Template". With this latest Blu-ray I added support for a "BACK" button from any given page. Examples shown below, pics of the TOP MENU.
TOP MENU: ![]() (Navigating "UP/DOWN" wraps around at either end. Navigating "RIGHT" performs the same action as pressing "OK". Well, only in cases where pressing "OK" would take you up a level within the menu. Navigating "LEFT" or selecting and activating the "BACK" button returns to the previous level of the menu.) PLAY: ![]() (When selecting "PLAY" and pressing "OK" the above "Resume" prompt is given which includes the "Overview" section from the back portion of the cover art. The "Resume where you left off" option selected by default in this case as playback can be resumed.) AUDIO: ![]() (When going to the "AUDIO" page the filled circle to the left of the menu items calls out the current audio stream for the Feature Presentation. Selecting the current stream will automatically take you to the "SUBTITLES" page. Navigating "RIGHT" at any time moves your selection to the current stream.) SUBTITLES: ![]() (When going to the "SUBTITLES" page the filled circle to the left of the menu items calls out the current subtitle stream for the Feature Presentation. Selecting the current stream will automatically take you back a level to the "PLAY" button. Navigating "RIGHT" at any time moves your selection to the current stream.) BONUS: ![]() (When going to the "BONUS" page the last menu item played or last category containing the last menu item played is selected by default.) BONUS (Resume): ![]() (The above "Resume" prompt is always given if playback of the selected "Bonus Feature" can be resumed, otherwise playback starts from the beginning, no prompt given.) BONUS (Commentary): ![]() (The commentary track is available from the "PLAY", "AUDIO" and "BONUS" options. Turning the commentary off results in the previous audio selection for the Feature Presentation being restored in addition to the previous bonus feature selection.) BONUS (Commentary\Resume): ![]() (The above "Resume" prompt is always given if playback of the "Feature Presentation" can be resumed, otherwise playback starts from the beginning, no prompt given.) BONUS (Radio & TV Spots): ![]() (The original disc presents a single list of all "Bonus Features". My version of the disc includes a separate page for the above items, a "PLAY ALL" option being included.) BONUS (Radio & TV Spots\Resume): ![]() (The above "Resume" prompt is always given if playback of the selected "Bonus Feature" can be resumed, otherwise playback starts from the beginning, no prompt given.) BONUS (Bonus Trailers): ![]() (The original disc presents a single list of all "Bonus Features". My version of the disc includes a separate page for the above items, a "PLAY ALL" option being included.) BD Rebuilder's "Quick-Play" feature (Mode\Quick-Play Backup) will create a simple TOP MENU for Title selection when authoring one or more Titles to Blu-ray. The feature can be customized in a number of ways. The "HIDDENOPTS.TXT" file in the root of the BD Rebuilder folder calls out said options which you'd add to your "BDREBUILDER.INI" file. Mess around with it some. You can't break anything.

Suspect Zero (2004)
I authored this movie to Blu-ray some time ago, the digital offering that I own. I've since purchased Kino Lorber's Blu-ray release. Still working on my "Universal Blu-ray Authoring Template". Decided to put it through its paces here. Below is the end result, the menus mirroring the "Bringing Out the Dead" layout a few posts back. Eye candy provided below for your viewing pleasure.
TOP MENU: ![]() (Navigating "LEFT/RIGHT" wraps around at either end. Navigating "UP" performs the same action as pressing "OK" in cases where pressing "OK" would take you up a level within the menu. The "Resume where you left off" option in this case is greyed out as playback can't be resumed.) AUDIO: ![]() (When going to the "AUDIO" page the filled circle to the left of the menu items calls out the current stream for the Feature Presentation. Selecting the current stream automatically takes you to the "SUBTITLES" page. Navigating "RIGHT" at any time moves your selection to the current stream.) SUBTITLES: ![]() (When going to the "SUBTITLES" page the filled circle to the left of the menu items calls out the current stream for the Feature Presentation. Selecting the current stream automatically takes you back a level to the "PLAY" button. Navigating "RIGHT" at any time moves your selection to the current stream.) BONUS: ![]() (When going to the "BONUS" page the last category and/or menu item played is selected by default. The last menu item played can be accessed at any time by navigating "RIGHT".) BONUS (Resume): ![]() (The above "Resume" prompt is always given if playback of the selected "Bonus Feature" can be resumed, otherwise playback starts from the beginning, no prompt given.) BONUS (Commentary): ![]() (The commentary track is available from the "AUDIO" and "BONUS" options. Turning the commentary off results in the previous audio selection for the Feature Presentation being restored in addition to the previous "Bonus Feature" selection.) BONUS (Featurette): ![]() (The original disc presents a single list of all "Bonus Features". My version of the disc includes a separate page for the above items.) BONUS (Alternate Ending): ![]() (The original disc presents a single list of all "Bonus Features". My version of the disc includes a separate page for the above items.) BONUS (Feature Trailers & TV Spots): ![]() (The original disc presents a single list of all "Bonus Features". My version of the disc includes a separate page for the above items, a "PLAY ALL" option being included.) BONUS (Bonus Trailers): ![]() (The original disc presents a single list of all "Bonus Features". My version of the disc includes a separate page for the above items, a "PLAY ALL" option being included.) SECONDARY POPUP MENU (Return to MAIN MENU.): ![]() (The image above shows what the POPUP MENU looks like when when initiating playback of a "Bonus Feature" from the TOP MENU. Pressing "OK" takes you back to the TOP MENU. Navigating "DOWN" turns the POPUP MENU off.) ___________________ POPUP MENU (Feature Presentation): ![]() (Navigating "LEFT/RIGHT" wraps around at either end. Navigating "UP" performs the same action as pressing "OK" in cases where pressing "OK" would take you up a level within the menu. Navigating "DOWN" is used to return to the previous level of the menu. Navigating "DOWN" from the first level of the menu turns the POPUP MENU off. When turning the POPUP MENU off, then back on again the prior state of the POPUP MENU is restored.) SECONDARY POPUP MENU (Return to FEATURE PRESENTATION.): ![]() (The image above shows what the POPUP MENU looks like when when initiating playback of a "Bonus Feature" from the Feature Presentation. Pressing "OK" resumes playback of the Feature Presentation. Navigating "DOWN" turns the POPUP MENU off.) ___________________ SECONDARY POPUP MENU (First Playback): ![]() (The image above shows what the POPUP MENU looks like when accessed during First Playback prior to reaching the TOP MENU for the first time. Pressing "OK" skips directly to the TOP MENU. Navigating "DOWN" turns the POPUP MENU off.) __________________________________ Details acquired from original disc prior to plugging values into my template... No Way Out (1987)
Well, so much for "by the end of 2024". Development of my "Universal Blu-ray Authoring Template" continues. Below is the latest victim. Along the way I fixed a couple bugs in addition to making several improvements. Enjoy checking out the pics.
![]() SECONDARY POPUP MENU (First Playback): ![]() (The image above shows what the POPUP MENU looks like when accessed during First Playback prior to reaching the TOP MENU for the first time. Pressing "OK" skips directly to the TOP MENU. Navigating "DOWN" turns the POPUP MENU off.) TOP MENU: ![]() (Navigating "UP/DOWN" wraps around at either end. Selecting and activating the "BACK" button when available takes you to the previous level of the menu.) PLAY: ![]() (When selecting "PLAY" and pressing "OK" the above "Resume" prompt is given which includes the "Overview" section from the back portion of the cover art. The "Resume where you left off" option is greyed out in the above example as playback can't be resumed.) SCENES (Chapters 1-3): ![]() (When activating the "SCENES" option the current chapter played is selected by default. Navigating "UP/DOWN" wraps around at either end. Navigating "LEFT" moves your selection to the current chapter. Navigating "RIGHT" takes you to the previous level of the menu.) SCENES (Chapters 4-6): ![]() (When activating the "SCENES" option the current chapter played is selected by default. Navigating "UP/DOWN" wraps around at either end. Navigating "LEFT" moves your selection to the current chapter. Navigating "RIGHT" takes you to the previous level of the menu.) SCENES (Chapters 7-9): ![]() (When activating the "SCENES" option the current chapter played is selected by default. Navigating "UP/DOWN" wraps around at either end. Navigating "LEFT" moves your selection to the current chapter. Navigating "RIGHT" takes you to the previous level of the menu.) AUDIO: ![]() (When going to the "AUDIO" page the filled circle to the right of the menu items calls out the current audio stream for the Feature Presentation. Selecting the current stream takes you to the "SUBTITLES" page. If there's no "SUBTITLES" option you're instead taken to the "PLAY" option. Navigating "LEFT" moves your selection to the current stream.) SUBTITLES: ![]() (When going to the "SUBTITLES" page the filled circle to the right of the menu items calls out the current subtitle stream for the Feature Presentation. Selecting the current stream takes you to the "PLAY" option. Navigating "LEFT" moves your selection to the current stream.) BONUS: ![]() (When going to the "BONUS" page the last menu item played or last category containing the last menu item played is selected by default. Navigating "LEFT" moves your selection back to said item as if you had just gone to the page.) BONUS\Feature Length Audio Commentaries: ![]() (The commentary tracks are available from the "PLAY", "AUDIO" and "BONUS" options. Selecting the "Commentary Off" menu item results in the previous audio selection for the Feature Presentation being restored in addition to the default selection for the "Bonus" page reverting back to what it was prior.) BONUS\Bonus Trailers: ![]() (The original disc presents a single list of all "Bonus Features". My version of the disc includes a separate page for the above items, a "PLAY ALL" option being included.) BONUS\Resume: ![]() (The above "Resume" prompt is always given if playback of the selected "Bonus Feature" can be resumed, otherwise playback starts from the beginning, no prompt given.) SECONDARY POPUP MENU (Return to MAIN MENU.): ![]() (The image above shows what the POPUP MENU looks like when when initiating playback of a "Bonus Feature" from the TOP MENU. Pressing "OK" takes you back to the TOP MENU. Navigating "DOWN" turns the POPUP MENU off.) _________________ POPUP MENU (Feature Presentation): ![]() (The POPUP MENU for the Feature Presentation is identical to the TOP MENU in both form and function minus the "PLAY" option which is replaced with a "MAIN" button for returning back to the TOP MENU. The color scheme is inverted as well, i.e. white calling out the "normal" state of buttons rather than black.) SECONDARY POPUP MENU (Return to FEATURE PRESENTATION.): ![]() (The image above shows what the POPUP MENU looks like when when initiating playback of a "Bonus Feature" from the Feature Presentation. Pressing "OK" resumes playback of the Feature Presentation. Navigating "DOWN" turns the POPUP MENU off.) __________________________________ Details acquired from original disc prior to plugging values into my template... Thanks for the kind words. And yeah, that's the plan. Eventually.
![]() See my previous post here, an example where two versions of the same movie are available. On "First Playback" you're presented with a menu for deciding which version of the movie you'd like to watch. Once reaching the TOP MENU a bonus feature is available for going to the TOP MENU for the other version of the film and vice versa. With this latest update to the template it's now possible to restart playback of the disc if you prefer. This method makes better sense for an actual "Double Feature" Blu-ray, hence the addition. Hatari! (1962)
I purchased the Kino Lorber release of this movie last week. When creating my own Blu-ray for it I decided to combine the "AUDIO" and "SUBTITLES" options which is something my "Universal Blu-ray Authoring Template" didn't support prior. I've been wanting to add this to the mix for a while now. Figured why not. No better time than the present. In any event, eye candy of the menus shown below. Enjoy checking out the pics. Great looking Blu-ray transfer by the way. Night and day compared to the Warner Home Video release I purchased some 10 years ago now.
![]() TOP MENU: ![]() (Navigating "LEFT/RIGHT" wraps around at either end. Selecting and activating the "BACK" button when available takes you to the previous level of the menu.) PLAY: ![]() (The contents of a given page are displayed on the right side of the screen, the underscore below the given menu item to the left appearing faded when not on the main level of the menu. By default the full "Overview" section from the back portion of the retail cover art is shown. When selecting and activating the "PLAY" option the header and lower portion of the "Overview" is replaced, options given instead to play the movie. In the above example the "Resume where you left off" option is greyed out as playback can't be resumed.) SCENES (Chapters 1-5): ![]() (When activating the "SCENES" option the current chapter played is selected by default. Navigating "UP/DOWN" wraps around at either end. Navigating "RIGHT" moves your selection to the current chapter. Navigating "LEFT" takes you to the previous level of the menu.) SCENES (Chapters 6-10): ![]() (When activating the "SCENES" option the current chapter played is selected by default. Navigating "UP/DOWN" wraps around at either end. Navigating "RIGHT" moves your selection to the current chapter. Navigating "LEFT" takes you to the previous level of the menu.) SETUP: ![]() (When going to the "SETUP" page the filled circle to the right of each set of menu items calls out the current stream for the Feature Presentation. Navigating "RIGHT" at any time takes you to the current audio stream. Selecting the current audio stream takes you to the current subtitles stream. Selecting the current subtitles stream takes you to the "PLAY" option.) BONUS: ![]() (When going to the "BONUS" page the last menu item played is selected by default. Navigating "RIGHT" moves your selection back to said item as if you had just gone to the page. With prior Kino Lorber content my "BONUS" section would include dedicated pages for accessing the "Audio Commentaries" and "Bonus Trailers", the "Audio Commentaries" also being made available on the "AUDIO" page. In this case I decided to go with a single "BONUS" page containing all the trailers, the "Audio Commentary" still being made available on the "AUDIO" page. Well, the "Audio" section of the "SETUP" page.) BONUS\Resume: ![]() (The above "Resume" prompt is always given if playback of the selected "Bonus Feature" can be resumed, otherwise playback starts from the beginning, no prompt given.) __________________________________ And here's some pics of the POPUP MENU for the Feature Presentation. The menu here is identical to the TOP MENU in both form and function minus the "PLAY" option which is replaced with a "MAIN" button for returning back to the TOP MENU. The color scheme is the same as well, the layer styles applied in Photoshop having been taken up several notches for improved visibility. It's in Technicolor! MAIN: ![]() (Navigating "LEFT/RIGHT" wraps around at either end. When turning the menu off, then back on again the prior state of the menu is restored. Navigating "DOWN" from the first level of the menu turns the menu off.) SCENES: ![]() (When activating the "SCENES" option the current chapter played is selected by default. Selecting the current subtitles stream turns the menu off. Turning the menu back on at that point takes you to the "MAIN" button.) BONUS: ![]() (When going to the "BONUS" page the last menu item played is selected by default. Beverly Hills Ninja (1997)
Here's my latest victim, the Via Vision Entertainment release of "Beverly Hills Ninja". The original disc didn't allow for resuming playback of anything and didn't a "Scenes" menu option or POPUP MENU. Talk about barebones! Just finished rolling my own. Built everything from scratch of course minus the M2TS files for the Feature Presentation, Theatrical Trailer and First Playback items. I did like the original menu layout and graphics so I mirrored and built upon that. Quite pleased with the end result. Eye candy provided below as always. Enjoy checking out the pics.
![]() TOP MENU: ![]() (Navigating "LEFT/RIGHT" wraps around at either end. Navigating "UP" or pressing "OK" takes you up a level within the interface. Navigating "DOWN" from the bottommost item takes you back a level.) PLAY FILM: ![]() (Selecting and activating the "PLAY FILM" option prior would immediately start playback of the "Feature Presentation" from the beginning, no ability to resume playback if available. With my version of the disc the above "Resume" prompt is always shown which includes a description of the film. In the above example the "Resume where you left off" option is greyed out as playback can't be resumed.) BONUS: ![]() (When going to the "BONUS" page the last menu item played is selected by default. Navigating "RIGHT" moves your selection back to said item as if you had just gone to the page. Navigating "UP" from the topmost item would normally wrap around. With this disc I have an option set that requires 3 or more items before navigation wraps around.) BONUS\Resume: ![]() (The above "Resume" prompt is given if playback of the "Theatrical Trailer" can be resumed, otherwise playback starts from the beginning, no prompt given.) BONUS\Commentary: ![]() (The commentary track is available from the "BONUS" and "SETUP" options. Selecting the "Commentary Off" menu item results in the previous audio selection for the Feature Presentation being restored in addition to the default selection for the "Bonus Feature" page reverting back to what it was prior.) BONUS\Commentary\Resume: ![]() (The above "Resume" prompt is always given if playback of the "Feature Presentation" can be resumed, otherwise playback starts from the beginning, no prompt given.) SETUP: ![]() (When going to the "SETUP" page the filled circle to the left of each set of menu items calls out the current stream for the Feature Presentation. Navigating "RIGHT" at any time takes you to the current audio stream. Selecting the current audio stream takes you to the current subtitles stream. Selecting the current subtitles stream takes you to the "PLAY FILM" option.) __________________________________ POPUP MENU: ![]() (Navigating "LEFT/RIGHT" wraps around at either end. BONUS\Commentary\Resume: ![]() (The above "Resume" prompt is displayed when selecting a given commentary menu item, the options given to continue playback or start from beginning. When making your selection the POPUP MENU remains on, the user taken back to the "BONUS\Commentary" page.) SETUP: ![]() (When going to the "SETUP" page the filled circle to the left of each set of menu items calls out the current stream for the Feature Presentation. Navigating "RIGHT" at any time takes you to the current audio stream. Selecting the current audio stream takes you to the current subtitles stream. Selecting the current subtitles stream turns the menu off. Turning the menu back on at that point takes you to the "TOP MENU" button.) __________________________________ And here are pics of the secondary POPUP MENU accessible during "First Playback", before and after the "Feature Presentation" is played and while playing a given "Bonus Feature". Continued from prior post...
I had way too much fun authoring "Beverly Hills Ninja" to Blu-ray yesterday. Decided to go for broke this evening. In the process now of adding a "Scenes" menu option. See below.
SCENES (Chapters 1-5): ![]() (When activating the "SCENES" option the current chapter played is selected by default. Navigating "LEFT/RIGHT" wraps around at either end. Navigating "UP" moves your selection to the current chapter. Navigating "DOWN" takes you to the previous level of the menu.) SCENES (Chapters 6-10): ![]() (When selecting a given item the number below the chapter thumbnail displays its "Selected" state. The chapter thumbnails themselves have a selected state as well. The "Normal" state is a de-saturated version of the given image, the colors appearing muted. The "Selected" state is a full color version.) The above is a mock-up I created in Photoshop. Still deciding on which thumbnails to use. I have a couple to choose from for each chapter. And for those wondering, the swords framing each pic were lifted from the back portion of the DVD cover art. Pretty clever if I do say so myself. ![]() __________________________________ Well I finally had time today to put the above into practice. Properly integrated the above mock-up within my Photoshop template, then exporting the assets for import to the Blu-ray via BDedit. Took only 15 minutes from there to import the new objects to the menus, then making the other required edits. And a bit redundant, but why not. End result for the POPUP MENU shown below, the backdrop transparency increased significantly over what's used for the TOP MENU. (Pics in my prior post have been updated accordingly.) SCENES (Chapters 1-5): ![]() (When activating the "SCENES" option the current chapter played is selected by default. The "Selected" state is a full color version.) Tested the Blu-ray just now with PowerDVD. No issues. Next I'll be burning to BD-RE to test with a hardware based player, the M2TS file for the "Feature Presentation" not being included. I never include the larger M2TS files when burning to BD-RE for testing purposes. When playing the "Feature Presentation" in this scenario a hardware based Blu-ray player will end up playing the last frame of the video it was playing prior in place of the missing M2TS file, in this case the video from the TOP MENU. The POPUP MENU can still be accessed and tested at that point. If everything checks out it's time to put another BD-R to good use. In this case a BD-25, the Blu-ray weighing in at 20.4 GB (21,936,81,154 bytes). Last edited by Lowpro; 18th March 2025 at 04:54. |

Panic Room (2002)
A few weeks ago I purchased the movie, "Panic Room (2002)" on Blu-ray. The menu layout and underlying functionality include a couple items on my ToDoList, things I have yet to incorporate into my "Universal Blu-ray Authoring Template". Figured there's no better time than the present. To make the work more interesting I decided to recreate the "Panic Room" Blu-ray from scratch minus the M2TS files for the various videos of course. Along the way I'll be updating my template accordingly where needed.
That being said, I just completed a mock-up of the Blu-ray menus and exported the assets for use with BDedit. Well, for the TOP MENU. The menus in this case mirror the original disc very closely. The text spacing in particular is greatly improved over the original disc which used a font strip to populate all the text. Pretty sure that's why the letter spacing on the original disc is so odd looking. It's all over the place. In any event, eye candy of the TOP MENU provided below, a description accompanying each pic outlining the related behavior of the original disc. TOP MENU: ![]() (At the main level of the menu the "EXTRAS" menu items are always shown to the right, each menu item showing its "Normal" state, i.e. not selected. Navigating to the "RIGHT" from the "EXTRAS" option does not wrap around to "PLAY" in this case. Instead you're taken to the "EXTRAS" page just as if you had selected and activated the "EXTRAS" option. With my version navigation will wrap around from "EXTRAS" to "PLAY" and vice versa, the right portion of the screen used to display an "Overview" of the film instead rather than the contents of the "EXTRAS" page.) PLAY\RESUME: ![]() (The "PLAY" option never displays a "Resume" prompt if applicable. Playback either resumes if possible or starts from the beginning. The only way to invoke the "Resume" prompt is to stop playback of the disc, then start playback again. When doing so the above "Resume Playback?" prompt is displayed after the disc loads if applicable, the options "Yes" (...resume where you left off.) and "No" (...start from beginning.) given. With my version the "Resume Playback?" will be given if applicable without having to stop and restart playback of the disc. Navigating "DOWN" will provide for backing out if you change your mind.) SETUP\AUDIO: ![]() (The current audio stream for the film is called out by the small right arrow to the left of the given menu item. Navigating "UP" from the topmost item wraps around to the last available audio selection. Navigating "RIGHT" at any time takes you to the "Subtitles" button. Navigating "LEFT" takes you back a level to the "SETUP" option. Selecting and activating any of the audio selections sets the audio stream for the film, then takes you to the "SETUP\SUBTITLES" page. Navigating "DOWN" from the "Subtitles" button does not wrap around. Selecting and activating the "Subtitles" button takes you to the "SETUP\SUBTITLES" page.) SETUP\SUBTITLES (Page 1): ![]() (The current subtitle stream for the film is called out by the small right arrow to the left of the given menu item. Navigating "UP" from the topmost item wraps around to the last available subtitles selection on Page 2. Navigating "RIGHT" at any time takes you to the "Audio" button. Navigating "LEFT" takes you back a level to the "SETUP" option. Selecting and activating any of the subtitles selections sets the subtitle stream for the film, then takes you back a level to the "PLAY" option. Navigating "DOWN" from the "Audio" button does not wrap around. Selecting and activating the "Audio" button of course takes you to the "SETUP\AUDIO" page. | Additional pic: Page 2) SCENES (Chapters 1-4): ![]() (Chapter 1 is always selected by default when selecting and activating the "SCENES" option. Navigating "UP/DOWN" from there wraps around at either end. Navigating "RIGHT" does nothing. Navigating "LEFT" takes you back a level to the "SCENES" option. With my version of the disc the "current" chapter will always be what's selected by default, not Chapter 1. | Additional pics: Chapters 5-8, Chapters 9-12, Chapters 13-16) EXTRAS: ![]() (The "EXTRAS" option organizes its content into 4 categories. Selecting a given menu item and navigating "RIGHT" or pressing "OK" takes you to a dedicated page, one or more sub-menu items then being presented. Navigating "LEFT" takes you back a level.) EXTRAS\COMMENTARIES: ![]() (The "COMMENTARIES" option provides for setting the stream for the film to one of the commentary tracks. Selecting and activating the "On" option for a given commentary track sets the audio stream accordingly, then taking you to the "PLAY" option. Selecting the activating the "PLAY" option at that point resumes playback if possible, otherwise playback starts from the beginning. Selecting and activating the "Off" option for a given commentary track restores the previous non-commentary stream that was selected, then taking you to the "EXTRAS" option. Navigating "LEFT" takes you back a level.) EXTRAS\PRE-PRODUCTION: ![]() (The "PRE-PRODUCTION" option organizes its related content into 2 categories. Selecting a given menu item and navigating "RIGHT" or pressing "OK" takes you to a dedicated page, one or more sub-menu items then being presented. Navigating "LEFT" takes you back a level.) EXTRAS\PRE-PRODUCTION\PREP\The Testing Phase: ![]() (The "Prep" category offers 2 bonus features, the first of which is selected above. Note the "Run Time" displayed near the bottom of the screen. This is always the case when the selected menu item is a playable bonus feature, otherwise no "Run Time" is shown. | Additional pic: Safe Cracking School) EXTRAS\PRE-PRODUCTION\PREVISUALIZATION\Creating the Previs: ![]() (The "Previsualization" category offers 5 bonus features, the first of which is selected above. Again, note the "Run Time" displayed near the bottom of the screen. This indicates that the "Creating the Previs" menu item is a playable bonus feature. The same is the case for the "Previs Demo" menu items. The last two menu items do not display a "Run Time" in this case as each offer dedicated pages where one or more sub-menu items are presented. | Additional pics: Previs Demo, Previs Demo with Commentary) EXTRAS\PRE-PRODUCTION\PREVISUALIZATION\Habitrail Film: ![]() (Selecting the "Habitrail Film" menu item and navigating "RIGHT" or pressing "OK" takes you to the dedicated page shown above. Only one playable item is offered in this case, the dedicated page used so a description of the bonus feature can be given.) EXTRAS\PRE-PRODUCTION\PREVISUALIZATION\Multi-Angle Featurette: ![]() (Selecting the "Multi-Angle Featurette" menu item and navigating "RIGHT" or pressing "OK" takes you to the dedicated page shown above, the dedicated page providing for a description of the bonus feature to be given, the bonus feature spanning across 8 menu items. With the original disc the description provided on Page 1 is a wall of text. I decided to break things up a bit. The details are much easier to digest as a result I think. I also went with a smaller font size for the menu items, menu items 2-8 fitting comfortably on Page 2. The original disc spreads the menu items across 3 pages. Page 2 contains menu items 2-6. Page 3 contains menu items 7-8. Navigating "DOWN" from the last menu item on Page 3 does wrap back around to Page 1. | Additional pic: Page 2) EXTRAS\PRODUCTION\Shooting Panic Room: ![]() (Selecting the "PRODUCTION" category and navigating "RIGHT" or pressing "OK" takes you to the dedicated page shown above, the first menu item being selected by default. Again note the "Run Time" here, an indication that the selected menu item is a playable bonus feature. The same is the case for the "Make Up Effects" bonus feature. | Additional pic: Make Up Effects) EXTRAS\EASTER EGGS\Real Safe Rooms: ![]() (Selecting the "EASTER EGG" category and navigating "RIGHT" or pressing "OK" takes you to the dedicated page shown above, the first menu item being selected by default. The "Run Time" is once again present, an indication that the selected menu item is a playable bonus feature. The same is the case for the "Breaking the Mirror" bonus feature. | Additional pics: Breaking the Mirror. Digital Video Essentials) EXTRAS\RESUME (v1): ![]() (The original disc only supports resuming playback of a bonus feature when you stop playback of the disc, then start playback again. When doing this a "Resume Playback?" prompt is displayed after the disc loads, the options "Yes" and "No" given. I couldn't let that limitation stand of course. With my version the same "Resume Playback?" prompt will be given if applicable without having to stop and restart playback of the disc. Navigating "DOWN" will provide for backing out if you change your mind.) EXTRAS\RESUME (v2): ![]() (This is an alternate implementation of the "Resume" prompt for the bonus features. In this example I've configured Pages 8-13 to use the "Resume" prompt objects from Page 1 instead. Note the "BACK" arrow is not present as a result, the "PLAY" option showing as activated rather than the "EXTRAS" button. Leaning towards this configuration when eventually burning to BD-R.) I'm making excellent progress on my "Universal Blu-ray Authoring Template" per the needed additions required to replicate the "Panic Room" Blu-ray. I initially built the Blu-ray using the current version of my template. From there I began updating the template where needed while still maintaining the current functionality. The most significant additions involve the "Audio", "Subtitles" and "Bonus" pages.
My "Audio" and "Subtitles" pages now mirror the "Panic Room" Blu-ray with one exception. My template only supports 13 subtitle menu items, all of which must be displayed on-screen at the same time. The "Panic Room" Blu-ray has 16 subtitle menu items and spreads them across 2 pages. Working on addressing that today. And actually, there's another item I need to address. The "Subtitles Off" menu item is listed first with the "Panic Room" Blu-ray. My template currently requires "Subtitles Off" be the last item. So yeah, still some work to do. Another welcome addition to my template involves the "Bonus" pages. Page 6 is the initial page you're taken to when activating the "Bonus" option from the main level of the menu. The menu items on Page 6 can then be configured to play a bonus feature (...a title or chapter of a title) or act as a category taking you to a sub-menu page instead. Page 7 is reserved for when an audio commentary is included as a bonus feature. Pages 8 through 13 are for general use. That being said, the "Panic Room" Blu-ray nests bonus pages several levels deep. My template only supported nesting pages one level deep and only from Page 6. As a quick test for proof of concept I was able to replicate the page structure of the "Panic Room" Blu-ray for a couple of the bonus features, Page 9 nesting Pages 10 and Page 11. I'm now going back and building out the scheme so that any given page can nest another page. Well, for Pages 8-13, all of which fall under Page 6. The structure will be defined on First Playback when the disc initially loads, a variable added for each page, the assigned value calling out the parent page each child page is nested under. If no value is assigned Page 6 is used by default. __________________________________ Breakdown of original disc prior to plugging values into my template... In some cases a given bonus feature will offer more than one "Audio" or "Subtitle" selection. As such, I plan to enhance my secondary POPUP MENU even further to accommodate for this. If a single subtitle selection is offered the POPUP MENU will include a simple toggle for turning subtitles "On" or "Off". If more than one subtitle selection is offered selecting and activating the "Subtitles" button repeatedly will cycle through the available tracks. "Audio" selection will be handled the same way if applicable. Last edited by Lowpro; 30th March 2025 at 19:33. |

I just completed a significant update to the "Audio Commentary" support for my "Universal Blu-ray Authoring Template". My intention initially was to update the template, so that the "Commentary" page from the "Panic Room" Blu-ray could be mirrored in both form and function. In the end I put my own spin on things while maintaining all the functionality. Below is a pic of the "Commentaries" page which mirrors the "Panic Room" Blu-ray.
![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) The "On" and "Off" buttons and indicators for each menu item felt a bit overkill to me. It's basically an "Audio" page just for the commentary tracks which doesn't interfere with the main "Audio" page, the current non-commentary stream backed up, then restored when commentary is turned off. As such, I just kept things simple. End result shown below which mirrors the "Audio" page. No need to reinvent the wheel. Even included the "Run Time" down at the bottom. ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) The blue square is used to navigate the page, the arrow to the left calling out the current stream. The "Off" options with the original Blu-ray restore the previous non-commentary stream that was selected, then taking you back to the "EXTRAS" button. Turning a given commentary track "On" sets the stream, then taking you to the "PLAY" button. My version of the page can replicate that behavior, but can do a lot more. The GPR definitions I worked up for the page are shown below, each variable assigned the desired value under MovieObjects 1 & 2 run on First Playback. ![]() As you can see, I bring much more to the party. The behavior here can be set at every potential stage (GPR3020-GPR3024) when selecting, then activating a given menu item, including when going to access the POPUP MENU. Playback can also be initiated directly from the "Commentaries" page if you prefer versus being taken to the "PLAY" button. Activating "Commentary Off" by default takes you back to the "Commentaries" option on the "EXTRAS" page. The menu item can also be configured to initiate playback instead if you like. And why not, here's one more pic. ![]() (Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.) The above full screen "Resume" prompt is available as well, the "EXTRAS" menu items still appearing in the background. In the above example I've configured the "Commentaries" page to use the "Resume" prompt objects from Page 1, minus the large panel to the right which is specific to the page and selected menu item. Makes it appears as though you've gone to the "PLAY" button to initiate playback. The same "Resume" prompt is available from the "PLAY" button as well. Navigating "DOWN" provides for backing out if you change your mind. Last edited by Lowpro; 20th April 2025 at 04:25. |
